i went diving in north island, i think near the bay of plenty where cousteau has one of his top dive sites, and they said on the dive boat that pitch black gave a concert inside one of the caves....sounded awesome, and it was a great location.. diving and music, good combination

Nah, Flying Nun are owned by Time/Warner these days (having passed through the digestive system of the Murdoch empire on the way), and have been effectively dead as a creative label for maybe 5 years, and coughing up blood for rather longer. My impression of NZ based on the people I've must is it must be like Australia but with less shouting.

Did you know, by the way, that man was the only land mammal in New Zealand prior to the British invasion? The ecological niche filled by mice in the rest of the world was supposedly filled by a 10cm long stick insect...

I was planning to pop into New Zealand on my way home from travelling Australia, but was told it was still stuck in the seventies. I decided to give it a miss, flares aren't my thing.

You should visit Tonga while you're over there, nice people, except for the fucker that mugged me on Mardi Gras in Sydney. I'd just dropped a pill as well, and my girlfriend was too busy gawping at the twenty foot inflatable cocks to notice. Very bizarre.

Aye, there's plenty of that, mostly happening over the summer. Next summer is the return of the bi-annual Splore festival (www.splore.net) The main stage is next to a beach so you can swim and listen at the same time with a great view of the stage. We love our roots and dub (and herb!) here, and the Raglan Soundsplash festival (http://motherland.co.nz/soundsplash/index.htm) is the place to be, now that the Kaikoura Roots Festival is sadly no more. There are always parties in the South Island around New Years such as Uprising (www.canaanuprising.co.nz) and Phatclub's Drum n Basscamp (www.phatclub.co.nz). Obscure (www.obscure.co.nz) is a good site to check out information about upcoming parties.

Well the Maori people who arrived here about 1250AD did bring a few animals with them, such as the dogs, pigs and rats. But AFAIK the largest mammals prior to humans were three species of small bat. As a result, with no natural predators, in supposedly typical NZ fashion many birds said "bugger this, I can't be arsed flying about" and became flightless such as our slow-moving, nocturnal national symbol.

I was impressed to hear the other night there's something like hlf a million maoris today (the context was, before the Brits went there were a million then it went down to 300k now back to 500k so the population is rebuilding) - but last I heard the total population of NZ was about 3m right? so the maori poeple make up a sixth of population

coming from Tasmania where there are no full blood indigenous Tasmanians left I thought that was cool to hear

(BTW that 70s comment - ignore it, NZ sounds like the best place on earth from everything I hear - I went when I was 10 but dont remember much, but my step father is a KIWI but left in the 60s when it was still quite backward and people left for work etc, but on 2007 it really sounds like one of the most desirable places on the planet and KIWIs always seem to be amazingly happy people)

We just topped (count 'em) 4m last year. Maori make up about 15% of the population.
