anyone using AMD operton quads w/ ableton 6

Post by jefftubbs » Mon Mar 12, 2007 2:17 am

Helllo everyone....

just wondering if any one here is using a amd operton quad set up...

does ableton utilize all four cores?

Im in need to upgrade my system im at a single core amd athlon which runs well but I need more power.

i thought about going to mac but If I can build a faster system than a macpro for 1000 bucks less I'll go that route.

thanks for any advise!

I have the exact same setup athlon 1.8Ghz and just upgraded from 512Mb Ram to 1512Mb RAm Thought that would solve some cuts when using too many effects but did not help at all...
Now hesitating wether to buy a core duo cpu, a mac book or a toshiba touch screen laptop also core 2 ???
Anyone who can help??\

I did try a quad core from amd a week or 2 ago

did not look very closely if live use the 4 core well

but the things were running fine, did mess with it about 5 mins so...

I think the quad core is pretty overpriced for now

personnal opinion.

im sorry i meant quad as in 2 dual core opteron chips...im still weighing my options....wondering what desktops most are using and the type of performance they are getting...it seems most on here are on macbook pros...i want to go mac but i dont know that it is the best time to get a macpro...so i was thinking of building a temporary dual core amd system to get me by another year and then see where the macs are...or what about getting a power pc g5 like a dual core 2.0? the price is a little better on those than the macpros....and they still kick ass from what I read?....dont know

Got a dual core socket 939 here ( the old one), nothing to complain about

got another amd dualcore at work with the last socket, no complain too

having a laptop with intel dual core on, no complain too

I guess i'm not helping at all hey :)

anyway

Amd have good dualcore system, just grab a good mobo with it and sufficient ram amount ( consider 2 gigs) and you are on the boat

I have an AMD 64 3200+ it's an older system but it's fast I don't have any issues with performance so far. You don't need to get a macbook pro to get good performance that's for sure. My next upgrade will be an AMD 64 X2 6000+ and a very good mobo 2GBs of ram also remember to get fast hard drives and for samples always use a dedicated drive for storing and streaming from them. Look at Sata 10k lots of storage space.

I too am an AMD fanboy, but with every single test proving Core2Duo as a better less power-sucking chip, why go with Athlon 6000+? I think that the comparable C2D is cheaper than the Athlon...I personally don't think AMD can catch up until they start doing native 4-cores later this year.

I've always found that the comparable Intel chips to the Athlon's are more expensive. In my opinion the AMD chips give you better bang for the buck... I agree all the tests prove the Core 2 Duo is the king right now but let's see what AMD comes up with.

thanks guys this was what i was looking to hear...

I'm currently using a athlon 64 3400 754 on an asus k8v se deluxe mobo with 2 gigs of pc 3200 ram 2x512 1x1g. 2 ide HDs 1 audio and the other os and programs

i was looking at a 939 mobo with the athlon 64 x2 5400 and using the same ram and maybe adding one more gig of ram. wouldn't I see more performance because i would then have two pairs of ram?

this upgrade utilizing the few parts out of my current system would save me some bucks and buy me time to see how the macpros hold over time.

thanks again

Jeff
