bug: - Live 6.05 plays certain tracks out of time

Post by Angstrom » Wed Mar 14, 2007 2:28 am

Hi,
I have a song which I am working on which exhibits a very strange bug. The bug goes away if I save the song and restart Live (and re-load the song) but it eventually returns.

THE BUG

In arrangement after working for some time a couple of the tracks play audio (they are audio tracks) which isn't at that position on the timeline! or alternatively they don't play audio which is there. That audio will then start in an odd place sometime later. EG: one and a quarter bars later. Or alternatively the audio will play 18 or 29 bars later than it should. really odd random times.

Note : session clips are not playing and the 'back to arrangement' button is not illuminated. There isn't a 19 and a 1/4 bar audio delay device hidden anywhere (!)

I tried a number of things to solve it, sometimes I thought I had fixed it, but it returned each time. The only thing these two tracks have in common is that they were both originally recorded via input = 'resample' , although both now have their input set to 'external in', as I tried switching the source around to see if it helped. Monitor is set to Auto and Record is not armed.

The bug will seem to clear up sometimes without closing the app. All the audio plays perfectly in time, but then a few minutes later the same audio will be silent when it should sound and it will later sound when it should be silent!

It's very strange, the current song uses a lot of chopped up pieces, but I cant see why that would be a problem.

I've never noticed this particular issue before. Very strange. I guess You are going to need the arrangement to comment properly - which will be a pain as it is pretty massive I think

Hi,

Does this happen in a 'predictible' manner? Does it happen after stopping and then restarting the transport, or without stopping?

You can send me the set at [email protected]. Are there a lot of audio files? If you can manage to pack the whole thing and the size is below 10Mo, then send the sound files also.

hi,
the problem is not predictable.
It usually occurs after I have stopped and then restarted the track, or used the 'jump to here' speaker icon on the timeline, or clicked on a locator.
The only 'predictable thing is that it appears on two specific tracks.

The closest I have come to tracking down the issue, and this is more of a hunch than anything, is:

I have used a lot of 'delete time' commands and the song itself is in a very odd time signature, in fact it moves from 4/4 to 14/16 . the latter value means that bar starts fall between global (4/4) markers. So a bar of 14/16 will begin on 120.4.3 for example.

Anyway, I have this feeling that the affected tracks are starting to play where they would have played if I hadn't made the 'delete time' edits. It just seems that way because the offsets are so huge, are often 'in time' but are offset by a quarter bar or an eighth note. Indicating to me to time removal is a factor.

anyway I'll try and package one up and stick it on an ftp account somewhere.

Hi,
still having this problem and it is definitely related to "delete Time" . Whenever I delete a section of time, these particular problem tracks only start to play where they used to be.

EG: if I cut three quarters of a bar out of the arrangement timeline, and the problem track has a clip which now starts visually on 10.0.0 it will audibly start on 10.4.0 , IE.. where it used to be.

After I have finished what I am doing on this particular track I will try and put together a minimal live set which exhibits this problem. What you will have to do is delete a section of time yourself to trigger the issue.

My current method of working is to 'save as' and then re-load, which fixes the out of sync issue.

Hi,

@Angstrom: If you find the time to send me a small set at [email protected], that would be nice, let me know otherwise.

@sweetjesus: I can't find a mail from yourself either in the support inbox nor in my personal email account. Would you mean that we just don't anser your mails? :)

I'm having a similar issue in Session view, and I also sent in a project showing this awhile ago. Happens in 6.05 and 6.06b6.

Basically I have a scene with 6 midi clips, when i launch the scene a couple of the clips don't start right away even though their play buttons show them as launched. Then randomly 1-20 bars later they start. I checked the obvious launch quantization for the session and those clips, and both are set to 1 bar.

I can get these clips to if I reclick their play buttons, but nothing I do will get them to start like they are supposed to at the same time as the rest of the clips.

Now I remember why I never use MIDI...

Argh, this is happening with all my Live songs that use MIDI now!

What the heck, if I use Arrange view I can'tt play things in tune, and if I use Session view I can't play things in Time?

Ableton, whatever I said to offend you, I'm sorry. Please uncurse my software now so i can make music again :( Why does this always happen to me when I take a vacation day from work cause I have good ideas for my songs...

6th January here is 5th January in Germany.

The email was sent, its still in my outbox. If you guys didnt get it, maybe worth having a chat to your web admin. Having emails not arrive to a business is quite disasterous.
