[ot] Someone please explain MySpace to me
Right, I realise a lot of you love it.
A friend of mine says 'join join join' so I tried. I spent all of six minutes on there, and I just don't understand it.
Besides letting you hear people's tracks, what the fuck is it good for?
Now, this friend thinks Slashdot is 'the gayest thing he's ever seen'. Personally I quite like Slashdot for all its spottyfacedness and LOOKATMELOOKATMEity, but I generally respect this guy, so I'm thinking there must be something I'm not getting. But all I see is spottyfacedness and LOOKATMELOOKATMEity without the content.
I don't want to release my music on there (the four people that want to hear it will hear it when I want them to) - but nor does my mate -, and the player doesn't work in my browser, anyways (cos I use an 'alternative' OS for day-to-day computing). So what's left? Useless blogs by useless people? Am I right? Am I wrong? Am I just a loser who bought an Apple Newton last year cos he's ticked off they never got the attention they deserved*?
Is MySpace not my space?

*Yeah, I did, and yeah, I am.

Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

Well from here...... The majority of the Australian metal scene is run
through MySpace, it's the primary point of contact for most inter-band
communication for starters. When you're talking bout doing more gigs with
a band its always "Hit us up on myspace", a lot more often then it's
swapping email addresses or phone numbers.

funny you say this, as i just had a conversation about 2 minutes ago with someone about not understanding myspace. I have a link at the bottom of this very post for it, but It's like i now have a website and a myspace and the myspace does nothing email and the website have done for the last 6 years, but with a shitty user interface and general pointlessness involved.....maybe you will click on my myspace page and become my freind and we will sign each other and get rich and say je comprende je comprende

It's got a terrible interface, it downsamples your music to hash, you get spammed by people of dubious character (no, I don't want to know about your Hello Kitty Dolls thank you, and all you 'get rich quick' or buy my 'inside success to the recording business' schmucky crap). It also has a gazillion pop up and flash ads that often link to adware or spyware sites.
It's successful because it was the buzz thing for a while. And with 80 million users you almost HAVE to sign up if you want to be noticed. I reluctantly have myspace pages but I turned download off my music to protect people spreading the godawful resampled mp3 quality they use.
The hardest part is how do you get noticed among the 80 million users? Myspace can work for you if you put the effort in to search out good contacts, but if you sit back and no nothing with it then nothing happens. At the end of the day, it usefulness is linked to how much effort you put into it.

hahaha myspace is a place for loosers
I have a myspace account with 5000 friends that I dont know, and sometimes i wonder if it's worth my time. but i will say you can meet cool people on there and make some**** good connections but NOT all the time.
And for your friend to trash talk Slashdot is a sin! Slashdot f*cking ROX!

Paws, if you're making music for 4 people, then Myspace is not for you.
I think it's important not to overthink Myspace. To me, it's a free way to publicize a project, and nothing more. If you don't want the free publicity, then don't bother. It's true, you get out of it what you put into it... in a sense. A LOT of people put waaaay more into it than they could ever get out of it. It's a machine that feeds narcissism. You have to be a bit narcissistic to a degree if you want to push your music out there.
Don't overthink. Use it or lose it.

That's basically it, don't expect too much.
Myspace can be kind of fun and semi-useful: you can list your upcoming gigs, post your gigs as events, send bulletins about new releases or uploads, and add people whose pages indicate they have similar interests into your network, irrespective of where they are in the world. The idea is that if you post an event, people looking for events of that type will see it, and tell other people in their myspace network.
If you are not finding it fun or semi useful, get a cheap website if all you are looking to do is post mp3s to share with people, or use one of the free file sharing ones.

I have a website. I actually have two. One is properly hosted, the other runs on my 'always-on' computer in the office (only it's not really a website ATM.. just a place I can ssh into from anywhere).mikemc wrote:If you are not finding it fun or semi useful, get a cheap website if all you are looking to do is post mp3s to share with people, or use one of the free file sharing ones.
Anyways, thanks fellas. I think I'll spare myself the pain..

I think that myspace is a hype!
Everybody talks about it, and every body thinks it's worth the time, but i think its just a waste of time in the long end.
Everybody got a lot of "Friends" that actually only promotes their own stuff. Okay some friends will maybe link you to their site, but it only cost alot of time to manage all the crap.
Instead of wasting my time with myspace, i use my time on a professional website which looks proffesional and not crappy like the pages on myspace, and i only got visitors who actually cares about my music, and i even got more time to produce tracks.
I don't want to have alot of "Friends" who actually is nothing else than a lot of parasites, waiting to get something for free, or even steal my positive energy in the end.
I know a guy who actually don't do have so many friends because he's a asshole, and now he is proud, because he got 5000 friends on myspace!? I just have to laugh..!
Some people maybe get a bit out of it, but thats a small group only...
regards
