MIDI Effect Racks / Macro to SEND CC-data?
MIDI Effect Racks / Macro to SEND CC-data?
While Live excels at mapping CC data from external gear to internal parameters (macros, etc.), I'm having difficulty figuring out how to do the reverse.
I would LOVE to build a series of MIDI Effects Racks to simplify the recording and sending of CC data to my external hardware synths.
For a musician with a pile of outboard hardware, there are a myriad of possibilities. Examples from my heart: a SIDstation Filter Rack in which the 8 macros are mapped to the CC messages for filter control (filter resonance, filter type, filter cutoff, osc1 filter active, osc2 filter active, osc3 filter active, etc.). Or a K5000 Additive Rack in which the 8 macros are mapped to the CC messages additive parameters (even/odd, FF bias, FF speed, etc.).
Am I just spoiled by the "environment" concept in Logic, or is there a way to do this in Live 6 too?
Thanks,
Eric

I've got TRACK, SYNC, and REMOTE checked for my external ports, and I can happily send CC messages to my external gear (i.e. I can set up a clip and draw in cutoff, resonance, etc. and it all works perfectly).
What I'm looking for is a way to assign these CC messages to knobs in Live (as part of a MIDI Effect Rack). This would allow me to easily map a few sliders on my control surface to multiple CC messages on my external gear.
I'm pretty sure at this point that there is nothing like this.

You're mistaken.8MoreBits wrote:Yes (at least I think so). Automapping maps an external controller to the parameters of Live's devices.
There is no way (as far as I can tell), via automapping (or creating a manual map) to reverse this process to send CC messages to an external / hardware instrument.
Or am I mistaken about this?
Automap is a 2-way street. The MIDI controller you use needs feedback from Live.
If you place an empty rack on a track and use the 8 macro's while a MIDI source is receiving, 8 CC's will be sent out. Which CC's depends on the remote MIDI map you selected. Use a MIDI monitor to figure out which CC's.
You don't even need to use automap if it sounds too complicated.
"MIDI learn" a CC to a macro on an empty rack and make sure you set up "MIDI remote in/out' correctly.
You'll get the same result plus you get to specify which CC to use.

F*ck you, H2K!
Helping people with these things has made me happy over the years.
But the fact that I've pissed you off with this stuff over the years, is what keeps me motivated.
You'll probably already made the link...
But this method basically allows you to easily remap all your precious CC curves you collected over the years to a light, camera or parameter..
A little bit of basic MIDI routing and a though morning trying to get your head around something thats right in front of you...
You're welcome
No. they'll only be saved with a .als file.Lord Kahn wrote:Will they be saved with the rack though? (Guess it doesn't matter that much as you'll probably need to set it up differently for each piece of outboard gear anyway...)
What people are basically asking for is something i asked a long time before racks were here.
We all miss it

Well, thanks to all the feedback, I sort of got this working (I do have an empty MIDI rack whose macro knobs send CCs to an external device).
Hoffman2k -- You mention '"MIDI learn" a CC to a macro on an empty rack'. Is there a way to do this with an arbitrary CC? I was able to do this by moving a knob on a remote device while in MIDI map mode. But plenty of parameters cannot be sent from a remote device (they are only found in a manual or whatever). Is there a way to edit the MIDI map in a text editor or something to reach other CCs?

There's no way to manually edit the CC numbers. Only by MIDI learn..8MoreBits wrote:Well, thanks to all the feedback, I sort of got this working (I do have an empty MIDI rack whose macro knobs send CCs to an external device).

Live doesn't accept all the incoming MIDI messages.
