I use these two methods.

Low pass filters with gentle slopes. De-essers; they're almost always needed for vocals, but you can put them on anything offensive.
You may have a little build -up so use those techniques on just a few offending tracks and not the whole mix.

I've never read so much utter crap in my life.

Aural Exciters and Leonard Cohen my arse.

Try giving your hats a narrow cut @ about 6khz and a shelving boost @ 12khz.

As an aside;

Bear in mind that P Diddy's studio cost about $1,000,000 more than yours. He probably employs some very skilled and experienced engineers too.

A $1,000,000 signal path and time-served recording, mix and mastering engineers go a long way to making your hi-hats sound smooth.

Also bear in mind that a smooth hi-hat never won a Grammy or made a record sell.

Good luck.
