How much do you actually sell on Juno, Beatport, ect....?

I don't know, I've actually been doing quite well on iTunes and eMusic and that's with absolutely no promotion what-so-ever (other than my sig here on this forum, my personal website and a couple of MySpace accounts which doesn't have that many "friends" other than actual people I know.)

So it all depends if people are digging your music or if you are promoting it. I wish I had the time to promote my music, but I've got too many other things going on at the moment, but this past month I've had a couple a hundred downloads between iTunes, eMusic and Rhapsody (which by the way, Rhapsody doesn't seem to pay at all and eMusic is bringing me more money than iTunes for the same amount of downloads.)

And I get 85% of the money since I am the label (my distributor gets the remaining 15%).

But I bet if you promote your music more, get it to online magazines for reviews, and have a MySpace account where you spam all of your 10,000 friends (which I hate by the way when bands do that, I have like 50 friends and I never spam them!) then you will see your numbers increase...

how do you guys get your stuff on beatport?

i know you dont just sign up for it, it has to represented by a label, but if im doing my own label thing do i just contact them and try to convince them to carry my stuff?

the others (iTunes, rhapsody, etc) can be accessed with cdbaby i know, but not beatport or juno....

yeah what if we just call ourselves a label, and say hey, sell these tracks online, and then send them the mp3s / wavs? i imagine its not that easy though. what else do we need? a business license to sell the tracks?

what about selling your music through your own website using something like paypal? would the returns be cheaper there?

good thread. i am always interested in learning the business side of things...

well i sell my tracks on my website through paypal, and they take a smaller percentage (out of $5 i get $4.50) but just being on beatport would probably help get you traffic and whatnot.

Everyone and their brother needs to check out a site I recently discovered... It pertains to this exact subject.

Anyone can upload their music,... the tracks start out free for people to d/l, once you have a few people d/l your tracks the price gradually rises, and can max out at 98 cents a track. There is no DRM on the tracks downloaded, and after your track makes $5 you keep 70% of all income after that(the first 5 is to cover there bandwith/server costs). I working on a few tracks to upload and test it out, but it seems like a really cool system, and hell it's free!! No sign-up fees, no membership fees, no labels needed... And no, I'm not affiliated in any way, I just see it as being a cool concept in getting some unknowns the exposure they deserve, and make a few bucks in the process...check it out guys, and let me know what you think.

This is a very good promotion starter website. Being that I'm not in it just for the money, at the present time. I mostly like to practice promoting myself to the public which is hard to do while having a family and working full time doing by the way is something so opposite of producing music (Insurance Salesman for Geico).

This site was very easy to get started up I've done that you see in like 10mins from basically getting the site started and uploading these 2 tracks already done.

i hear ya man, i got the job and the family (wife, 2 kids) too.

it can certainly hamper your music career...

ok good to know that you can do it yourself through paypal and a website.

but how can we sell our stuff on the bigger download sites like beatport? it seems like it should be easy. all you should have to do is call yourself a label, send them the song, and have them put it up for sale. it must be harder than that though, because then they would be flooded with tracks.

does anyone have experience with the best way to go about contacting the bigger download sites?
