got ableton, got a DJM800, what next?
I am looking for advice from people with ableton and a djm800 to give me advice on the best way to set it all up. i haven't yet purchased a proper ASIO soundcard/midi interface.. which way would be the best to go?

you're probably going to have to buy one of those pesky computer things unless you're really good at math
G5, G4x2 / G3 Live 3/4/5/6 Reason 2/2.5/3 virb soundclick

i'll be keeping the djm800, got hooked up with an interface, thanks!
What interface?
The way i look at it - why use a dj mixer as your sound output, i recon you will be having 2 - 4 channels seup on ableton, then using ableton to trigger tunes and then mixing them on your DJM 800.
With the capabilities of Live 6, you really are restricting yourself, and you might as well be using Traktor, Torq or or mixvibes..
because i have 4 tech12s, 2cdj1000s, over 1000 records, and hundreds of cds. i am primarily a dj and a dj mixer like the djm800 is perfect for me.
i am only looking to add a little ableton into my sets for now, trigger a few accapellas, and some FX, etc.
I will, sometime in the future move toward full on production and remixing and live audio recording, and i realize that will take some more gear.
but for now, the core of my setup is the djm800.

does the djm have bpm detection? if so perhaps route that into live for tempo sync..
hook up ur dex and cds to the djm then hook up live... make midi shortcuts to the control u wanna manipulate in live... set multiple channel outputs from live in output config if u want to have more seperate outputs from live into the djm800...

yes, the question is, what audio interface would work best for my neeeds.
i have purchased an edirol um-1ex usb to midi interface, this works for keeping the djm800 and ableton in sync. however, i am going to need some sort of external breakout box with a bunch of ins and outs to really use the full potential of live in my dj sets.
just wondering which are good!

Echo audiofire 4 and motu ultralite are the best firewire ones IMO,
But if you have a PC with PCMCIA slot i would go for the Emu 1616M, i had one before my mac and i think its a brilliant soundcard.
If you just want 2 outputs & keep it simple the Echo indigo DJ should be the one, cheap and very good.

Briden-
Need a little more info. I imagine you have a laptop, the question is, do you have a firewire port? Do you have a PCMCIA slot? Do you have an Express Card port? What do you have?
In return, I have a question for you. I just got my tax return and I think it's finally time I bought a DJ mixer. I bought a pair of used 1200s about a year ago and haven't gotten around to buying a mixer yet (thanks to Ableton).
I don't want to buy a shitty mixer, but I also can't go nutz and buy a Xone 3D. I mean, if the stupid Xone 3D wasn't so fuckingly STUPID expensive, maybe I could consider getting one. But no, they were made only for Ableton users with a spare $3000 laying around.
But, I think I could bring myself up to buying a Xone 92, if it's really worth the $1600. This is my first DJ mixer. I want a nice one with a decent resale value so I could sell it later if I'm not into it. For me, it pretty much boils down to the nice Pioneers and A&H. The Korg Zero series is cool- but a little to new for me. I'd rather own a refined design. Why did you get a DJM800?
Thanks,
Sam

actually, i don't have a laptop. my setup resides in my house at the moment, except when i take it out for gigs (take my decks and mixer, ableton is just a thing i am mucking with at home, it hasn't made it to any live sets yet). so, no, i don't have firewire, i don't have PCMCIA, just PCI.
you want my advice on a DJ mixer? DJM800. that's what i chose, because, the DJM600 served me well. i love the djm series, huge fan..
i have tried Xone:32, Xone:64, and Xone:92 and did not like any of them.
The DJM just happened to have everything i wanted. it was damn expensive too, $2400, but totally worth it. it's as you say, a refined design.
there are cheaper mixers that will do the trick for you though.
pioneer djm400 comes to mind.
maybe one of the new Xones if you like that style?
basically... it boils down to, your gonna pay $2000 plus to get a mixer that controls ableton. OR, you can get any crap mixer for $500, and a controller for $300, and keep your worlds seperate.
i chose to get the djm800 so i would be ready for anything
