alright. i may not be the sharpest tool in the shed, but the manual included with live 3.0, as far as i can tell, is the single most worthless piece of instructional material ever assembled. leave it to the germans to create this labyrinth of pain. i love watching those neat movies, too... "yes, ableton live actually moniters your cholesterol and plays the stockmarket... in real time!". great. now if i could get it to do anything with music other than play dj himmlers jungle trance demo i'de be truly happy. to top it off, calling tech support and getting a pissed of, curt D & D player who really cant waste his time explaining to me how anything works in any other way than telling me to update the program...

all i want is to be happy like the germans in the video. i used to be a professional. i have been putting out albums since 96, i own a record label, a studio, im a producer, a performer... but now... now i am nothing. damn you ableton. you have ruined me. i'de like to give a shout out to dj krush for telling me to get this program... next time i see you i am going to have a serious talk with your translater.

you must be reading an umberto echo novel. the few times i've actually needed to crack the live manual, i've always found my answer quickly and well explained.

What in particular is it that's causing you bother? We're here to help

you need to stop thinking. Live doesn't care that you've been putting out albums since 96. In fact, it may see it as a distinct disadvantage. There's no saying what Live thinks, it's in another dimension. You need to be nice to it, observe it carefully, learn about its body language. It takes a short while of patience, but once you 'get it' you'll be able to ride this beast in ways and to places that ye olde MIDI-based horses don't even know about.

wow. thats beautiful. so live is actually a sentient being? a freeflowing beast from another dimension that resents working musicians? is this a program or a frigging unicorn? are you smoking opium?

see this is exactly what im talking about. i feel like im staring at the white piece of paper at the mall with the secrect picture of a sail boat on it that everyone else can see but me.

so excuse my general crabbyness. here is my situation.

g4 desktop.
1ghz dual proc.
1.75 gig ram
osx panther 3.4
m-box
pro tools 6.4

now. i would like to use my m-box as the audio interface for live. i go to audio preferences. i select this device for the input and output. it does nt work, i get no sound comming in. i get sound comming out. i go to the individual tracks, and try to select an input. my only choices are core audio and nothing. i try core audio. nothing works.

i wonder.... "how do i record auido in live?"

i go to the instruction manual. it points out where the record button is. all i need is a little practical guidance through these types of procedures. some reference as to what i SHOULD do, as opposed to what i CAN do. once i have that, im sure i can take the reigns. any help in these terms would be greatly appreciated.

you need to ask Live to monitor the audio input, or arm the track for recording first. this is done via the buttons to the immediate left of the track in question's volume slider/level meter.

if you want to listen to the audio through Live, with all the latency and effects that will add, you need to go the preferences and select 'play audio through live'.

it does work. it works exactly the way it's intended to work - it's just not intended to work like ProTools or Logic. Stay with us, you'll love it here

i got the new core audio driver and it has at least fixed the crashes everytime problem. im making a bit of progress. i was able to import audio files from a protools session. yay.

quick practical question:

i have a working sequence that i have imported from a previous protools file comprised of 8 or so tracks. how do i do the magical tempo/untouched pitch change thing that i bought this program for? your help is appreciated.

Import the audio, turn warping on (double click to see the clip parameters, make sure the 'warp' button is green, it may or may not be by default), type the clip's BPM into the Orig. BPM field. In the waveform view lower right, you should now see a warp marker for each beat... you double click a warp marker to 'nail it down', for instance if you nail down the second beat of a bar, that exact place in the waveform will be smack on the second beat of that bar no matter what master tempo you specify.

Edit - the drop down menu that says 'beats' by default and the parameters below it specify which algorithm type thing Live uses to work its magic. Play around with this for better timestretching - it might be a little jittery if you don't. Like I said, this pegasus takes a bit of getting used to

I thought that the live manual was very well laid out with information of how to work the software.

if you are having problems understanding though... maybe you should try checking out "Ableton Live Power"... it is a great book for giving you slick tutorials and helping you to get up to speed....

My friend is the East Coast rep for M-Audio & Ableton. With your status in the industry, I'm sure I can set up an at home Ableton training session for you if you're interested.

I feel your pain; the manual wasn't any help for me neither. My friend knows that program and other inside & out. You'll be rockin' with it in no time. It's a sick ass program once you learn how to flip it. A definite secret weapon for a lot of cats. I didn't know Krush was using it too.
