NIDI foot control and mappings for live show hands free.

Hi, I just started using Live 6. My purpose is basically to use it live. I'll be using it for quick studio things as well, but my question is regarding hands free live use by midi foot control. I don't know what to buy, or what I should be looking for since I don't even know what features I'll want to to control yet. I was hoping somebody could school me on that a little.

I'll be using a variety of instruments (softsynth drums and keys, turntable, guitar, bass, vocals, percussion, maybe anything) and I want to stay away from the computer as much as possible. To go further into detail, I'll be using one computer with LIVE 6 and a Korg padKontrol and a Fatar SL-161 keyboard controller. I also am using a Roland VM3100 digital mixer as my interface which should be able to transmit MIDI data for thometimes use it for putting together quick studio things at home while jammiings such as faders (i couldn't get it to work immediately with LIVE but it worked in Cubase so I assume I can do it somehow.) I'll also be adding a second computer to run my Torq DJ setup. This will probably be free of the Ableton setup sync wise and just hooked up through analog connections.

What is a good MIDI foot pedal to control live hands free? For this I mean basic transport and looping features, I realize I might have to grab the mouse for more advanced things. I'd like to have one with an expression pedal that I could assign as the tempo. Right now I'm using my MOD wheel on my keyboard controller but I'd like something hands free. I'm not looking to do a lot of warping or anything like that live just yet. Actually I don't even understand a lot of the feature yet so I don't know what to plan ahead for. Right now I'd just like some more foot control. I have a number of questions regarding how to map things for efficiency but I'll save it for another post as I've already rambled too much.

Lastly, does anybody have any starting point for primers, tips, tricks and such. As time goes on I'll be checking out everything (I'm currently going through the lessons and the manual), but I'd like to get a quick start so I can integrate this live.

Thanks.

The most popular by far is the Behringer FCB 1010. It's cheap and it works well with live. Editing it without software is a real pain, but luckily there are software editors for both PC and Mac (some are free, some are a few bucks). Also look for the Yahoo group for the FCB 1010, some tips there and downloads.

Search for 'Essential Looping config' thread on these here forums for a good way of setting up your live set for live looping if that's what you're after.

Using Mackie Control Emulation you can also assign some functions like delete, undo, move through scenes etc. to the foot pedal, and without having to map such functions using the mapping mode in Live (where parameters turn blue).
