Well, I was trying to answer your question as to whether I believed in "the talking snake."
My answer was meant to suggest that I don't believe the story is a factual account of what happened one day in a particular garden. I believe it's a story told to make a point. Much of literature does this kind of thing--teaches a "point" about life or whatnot by telling a story. Just because it draws on elements of myth doesn't automatically mean the point they're making is BS. Plenty of fictional stuff can teach you a lot.

It's the picking and choosing that weakens the argument for the Bible being factual. Fundamentalists are pretty extreme in thinking it's ALL FACT, period. The only way I could ever take it semi seriously was to look for the metaphors in the fiction. That just led to disagreements with people on what it meant. So, the Bible in itself inherently leads to disagreements between those that believe none of it, those that believe ALL of it and even those who agree to accept the metaphors. It's a shaky book to base your entire life, morals and values on.

I think the Bible has a lot of true, valid, and worthwhile lessons to teach about how to live. For sure. (I've asked this question before and gotten no good answer to it: Which aspects of the Christian ethic as expounded by Jesus are so objectionable?) The methods of teaching those lessons vary a great deal throughout the book.. some myth, some history, some poetry, some drama. I think the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads also have a lot of good and true things to teach--also through stories. The Dhammapada of the Buddha, same thing. To dismiss the content of these scriptures because of the literary method or genre (i.e., because these aren't verified newspaper accounts) is truly to miss the forest for the trees. Every big story ever told is that way--deeper truths revealed through story. Illiad, Oddysey, you name it. It's what the study of literature is all about.

Is it "picking and choosing" or interpretation and understanding. For example, in Judaism, we read the Bible as P'shat - simple meaning and Drash - deeper meaning. Without Drash, many of the statements and laws wouldn't make any sense. So either a: the hoax was written by a shoddy author for a really stupid audience (and the stupidity has been passed down for 4000 years) or b: the author is likened to a poet, whereby sublime ideas are conveyed, and hence basterdized, by words. If I tell my lover that she moves me like the wind, I'd be surprised if she responded: "Like a huricane, or a grade 4 tornado?".
