Sorry shtreimel, i don't follow your answer. Perhaps a specific example is useful:

to use angstroms paraphrasing:
angstrom wrote:wherever I go in the name of my church is mine by divine right, and I get to kill everyone there
Deuteronomy 7:1-2 :"When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee...thou shall smite them and utterly destroy them…nor shew mercy unto them."
This is written in the bible. This is a clear advocation of genocide (as long as god is on your side). Wouldnt you agree?

Perhaps what's being hinted at here is the difficulty of a religious organisation to change with the times. The goddamn Vatican STILL hates on gays, yet the pope fucks pigs. What's up with that?

Angstrom wrote:I've always fancied starting one of these Christian loudmouth setups, I think they are called 'evangelical' churches, the ones where they interpret the Bible however they like, picking and choosing.

So here are the tennets of my morally pure Christian church as ordained in the Bible

slaves are fine
Leviticus 25:44-46: "Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can will them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly."

I can have sex with the married women slaves as long as I
have a spare ram

Leviticus 19:20-22: "And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, even a ram for a trespass offering. And the priest shall make an atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he hath done: and the sin which he hath done shall be forgiven him."

wherever I go in the name of my church is mine by divine right, and I get to kill everyone there

Deuteronomy 7:1-2 :"When the Lord thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee...thou shall smite them and utterly destroy them…nor shew mercy unto them."

equality for women is a thing of the past
1 Tim 2:11-14 : "Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression."

Canibalism is fine too
Lev 26:29 "And ye shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters shall ye eat."

anyone want to sign up to my church, or are you all with Satan?
This is all directly from God's own book, you are either with him or against him.
Interesting isn't it? When you do provide such quotes from the holy manual, the religious have no response. Picking and choosing, just picking and choosing.
..?

I believe the Christians believe (not backing religion here just making a point) that the new Testament is the living word of Jesus Christ. They believe that many of the Old Testament (Deuteronomy) laws/symbolism were done away with because Jesus Christ took on those burdens so man didnt have to do all that shit anymore. Animal Sacrifice etc etc etc... i.e. Prince of Peace etc.

Although I dont really know jack about the Bible, I googled whats posted above (Deuteronomy 7) and it is clearly taken out of text. The entire thing is not "advocating" anything at all where modern times are concerned. Its one sentance out of many taken from a story in which God is talking to the Jews who he just saved from slavery from the Pharaoh and is basically telling the Jews to fuck up Pharaoh if they try to remove them from thier new land and make them slaves again.

hmmm,
thing is ... I was making a point about how extracts are used toprove any point you want to make. But still, there's a lot of smiting of peoples goes on in Deuteronomy. This is a bit from when they are on their way .. just passing through places. Every now and then God says "actually you can smite the fuck out of these" . Chapter 2 has a bit where God says

30: But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.
31: And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.
32: Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

God hardens the heart of Sihon, simply to justify the invasion. Way to go there God. Check out a bit of Chapter 3 where they get into a real killing frenzy as God goads them on!

Deuteronomy, chapter 3
1: Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.
2: And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
3: So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.
4: And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5: All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.
6: And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.
7: But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.
8: And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

Well after reading all that I can only conclude that if this God is real, two things are for sure.

1. He can get real pissed off.

&

2. People are going to Hell for sure cause I dont think hes going to take - "but I wasnt sure and needed real proof God" as an answer when we die if he's actually sitting there.

1. He's good cop/bad cop, old testament/new testament
2. A heaven full of christians sounds like hell to me. Would you want to spend
eternity with Jerry Falwell?? Fuck that, I'll be at the bar asking for more ice.

If all the world's religions say you go to hell if you're not a believer of that
religion, doesn't that mean that we're all going to hell?

I don't think they really all say that do they? Isnt it just Christianity/Catholics that believe that exactly?

Not sure myself.

hey.. I've been out most of the afternoon and evening. Good to see the page count flourishing. I don't have the energy right now to address any specifics. All I'll say at this point is WOW, some of you atheist dudes sure see religion (and life) in WAY more black & white terms than most religious people I know see things. We're talking some seriously myopic and unnuanced viewpoints. Not to mention intolerant.

Keep talkin'. Almost there.
