Heading to Berlin next week - any tips?

Post by marky » Thu Mar 22, 2007 4:15 am

Alright troops

Me and the woman are taking a much-needed vacation next week.. to Berlin, which I am really looking forward to.

I'm big into electronic music so this is a bit of a pilgrimage for me... but the entire trip is not going to revolve around just that.

So.. any tips on things to do in Berlin next week? Any nice bars/restuarants/clubs in the Mitte area where we're staying?

Anything I should look out for ? I guess it'll still be pretty chilly there at this time of the year.. we'll be there from Monday till Friday morning.

Any advice or tips greatly appreciated!

Thanks !

Cool.

Grab a copy of Tip or Zitty listings magazines when you're there to gen up on the main stuff. They should also have listings available on their websites to get an idea of what's going on beforehand.

Mitte is full of bars, clubs, restaurants, though the ones you'll see at Hackescher Markt, etc are the real tourist traps. Mitte has some good places, you'll just have to look around a bit longer.

Pretty much everywhere is within 30 minutes by public transport, so definitely make the effort to visit the other districts like Prenzlauerberg, Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, etc. Trains, trams, buses run late and 24-hour on some routes. Taxis are also quite cheap.

And, yes, it's a bit chilly - it was snowing all last night.

Have a great time!

(unfortunately you leave just too early to catch Ellen Allien at Watergate (http://www.bpitchcontrol.com/dates?PHPS ... ef07b8a0cc) which should be fantastic)

mitte is difficult... some beautiful corners, people and restaurants, but also lots of administration and presantation boredom and not the hottest clubs in town. besides some traditional punkrock ("8mm" is great (done by two ny-ers), and the new but nice "bassy" and the more popular "white trash" is next to it). most other clubs are extremely conservative crap (especially hiphop/dance-clubs), on better days kaminer´s "russendisko" at kaffee burger might be fun when you are high. all those playces are centered around "rosa-luxembourg-platz" not far from alex. but as i said, more rock´n roll than anything else.

the destrict prenzlberg still has some nice little places, but the real great thing seems missing right now.

so you better go to kreuzberg (subway-station schlesisches tor, especially "watergate" and "103" in reach) or fhain ("cassiopaiha" and "raw-tempel" (at warschauer str., hiphop/dub/break/techno and sorts), for tech-nerds especially "berghain/panorama" (at ostbahnhof) or "hangar" at ostkreuz on saturday). if the weather is nice just spot around, and drugs are to get everwhere (central: station "kottbusser tor" close to "schlesisches tor").

and for everything else ask people or take a look on of those mentioned listing-magazines.

you can have breakfast or lunch at 103 Bar, Kastanienallee 49
that's a cool place with nice food
and while we're at it, you can go clubbing at 103 club by the main bridge.
if you're more of a hadcore partier, go to panorama bar / bergheim. if you're on a pilgrimage, you'll reach mecca!
that's all i can think of for the moment

I spend quite a bit of time in Berlin while on tour etc but have just been stranded here this week waiting for my UK work permit to come through (yes, it snowed like a mofo lastnight!) and FINALLY, after all these years of coming here, went on a little guided our...

http://www.newberlintours.com/

Check these guys out. I took the FREE walking tour. The tour guides don't get paid but gladly accept tips at the end which is pretty cool if you ask me.

Learned a lot of cool stuff. Definitely helps you appreciate why Berlin, historically, is the way it is.

Have fun!

do not miss the Berghain and the panorama bar http://www.berghain.de/
at the moment it's probably the one classic techno club in Berlin that worth visiting even if you're not the greatest techno fan. friday is the day.
and the Tresor should be reopened soon. not sure when though.

Fantastic, tons of great tips there guys, it's much appreciated!

So I'm going to look into Berghain, Watergate, 103 and panorama, do you think any of these will be open mid-week (maybe Wed or Thursda) for me to jump around in? Even if there's cool little bars with nice electronic music / DJ and good atmosphere that would be enough ...

Those walking tours look pretty good too oldbetseysatan, we're hoping to get the chance to soak up lots of culture too :)

Tip or Zitty listings mags too - got it substance_g.

I'm going to pretend I didn't hear the parts about the snow !

Thanks again

Hi, if your looking for a place to stay also, I would recommend the Circus Hostel -

39, Rosa Luxemburg Strase

Saying that, if your coming all the way from the states, I guess you've got your accomodation sorted already?

Well, have fun :]

Try not to look like a baby polar bear. Some one may want you to die (for your own good, of course).

And yeah, I'm by NO means a walking tour type of guy but, well, you know, I thought I'd make the effort and learn a little about the city and it was really great.

Kids name was James that we had. From California. Funny and informative.

My work permit came through today so I'm flying out in a few hours but the weather, as insane as it is, seems to be clearing up.

Have a great time!
