to everybody who make music with bootcamp XP, help me!

Post by 5-ht1 » Fri Mar 23, 2007 11:45 am

Hi, i had a powerbook g4 with ableton live, too slow for my vst so i decided to buy a new laptop and use cubase sx (my old friend), i have a motu ultralite too and i don't want to sell it so, at first i thought i could buy a window laptop but i'll miss OSX so i decided to buy a macbook or a macbook pro.
Many here told me that window xp works fine on macbook but i need to know if there are problems with my motu ultralite or my midi controller AXIOM 49, and i need to know if window works in macbook like on another (with similar specifications) pc laptop..
I'm very confused but i took this decision just because i think that if you want a good laptop you have to spent the same money of a macbook pro (i have educational price) so in this way i can use win to make music and osx for internet and everything else.
please tell me

thanks a lot!

I use Live primarly in bootcamp, as there's still some plugins I need that aren't UB's (and probably won't be, BBE Sonic Maximiser :( )

Not used the Ultralite myself but considering getting one and selling my Firebox. I can't see there being any issues with any MIDI controller. Once you bootcamp, you have a Windows XP PC, simple as that.

Hardest thing is getting a version of XP with service pack 2 slipstreamed, but this is not so bad once you find out how.

Newegg for XP sp2. Get the OEM version.

Was the Firebox working well for you on XP on your Macbook?

Works OK apart from the bus power issue, main reason I want rid.

thanks a lot guys! I heard somewhere that window xp should be professional...what do you think about this? Is better xp prof or home edition or is the same thing? However i'll take a look to www.musicxp.com to set it. bye

No need for XP professional for music making (and 99% of everything else). Most differences are network related.

Home is fine. I have been running it for the past three days without a problem.

There is a hotfix that you should download regardless of which XP you go with. It has to do with multi-core/multi-processor/multi-thread CPUs and XP and the fact that XP you may not be getting the full performance out of your computer with XP and multicore computers.

Do a google search for hotfix multi-core XP and you will probably find it. I didnt do any scientific tests, but I could swear that XP home and LIVE are much snappier after the hotfix on my Macbook.

Also, just to let you know.. It is my experience that sets that ran around 40% on my old P4 3.2GHz are now running around 10-12% on the Macbook under XP. Sweet!!!

Keep in mind I am running XPHome.

Best,

i've been running XP borg (a hacked edition i highly recommend) for ages now using boot camp and i've never had any problems. it crashes now and then, but that's to be expected when you really put ableton through the paces. i keep my live setup on the mac half, and keep it real simple and i've never had problems there either.

go for it.

Whilst it is perhaps academic, having 2GB of RAM made vast differences in performance within XP on my MacBook, much more noticible than OSX.
