Multiple M-Audio devices on Windows Vista -- only one works

Hello -- I'm running Live 6 on Windows Vista and I have two M-Audio O2 USB keyboards. THey are both installed correctly and in the MIDI set-up I can see both of them, but I can only get one to work at a time.

They are both functional -- when I disable one, the other works.

But I'd love to get both working at the same time. I've search for similar problems but I haven't found any similar questions.

Any thoughts?

p.s. I also wonder if I could rename the devices to help me keep them seperated from each other (it gets confusing).

Try plugging them in to different USB hubs, by which I mean one directly into the PC, and one through a hub of some sort. This will assign them different Hardware ID #s.

You could also try changing the MIDI device ID#, from your keyboard, but don't forget to set it back to 127 for most automapping data dumps.

There are workarounds for renaming devices but they are ugly.
On XP you'd just install an identical driver, but edit the .inf file by hand to give a new hardware name, or delve into the registry and do it from there.

On Vista that's in HKEY\LocalMachine\CurrentControlSet\Enum\. From there select the device [probably in HID or USB], and edit the DeviceDesc Key. [Not for the faint-hearted]. Back up your registry first natch.

I'm not all up to speed on PC's and the various workarounds. But I seem to have read about this issue.

Some people were only able to use 1 interface on XP.
So they either installed something callled "asio4all" or had to wait a few weeks/months for M-audio to update their drivers.

This might be the case again. Thoug, its just a guess.

Does the O2 have a device ID or something similar in it's settings? Usually when using two identical midi devices you need to set them both to seperate Device ID's to get them to work together.

Well I've tried different hubs, that didn't change anything.

I also tried changing the device ID on one of the keyboards, and that didn't do much.

I wonder if after changing the device ID I need to reinstall the devices?

I've also verified that this is likely a Live specific problem -- within Cubase I can't get MIDI input from both keyboards at the same time.
