Choosing an external hard drive

Post by philipc » Tue Mar 27, 2007 1:11 pm

I'm looking for an external hard drive and i've decided on the Lacie D2. I'm wondering about the different sizes. Is there any benefit at all from having a smaller capacity? i.e. the 500gb model is only about 70% more than the price of the 160gb model so it makes sense to get the biggest one...

but would a smaller drive, say 250gb or 160gb be faster or more reliable?

Thats what i'm trying to say in a really long winded way

I would say get 2 HD with less capacity, and use 1 for backups.
Example 150GB X2

About speed i am not sure,a 7200rpm HD is good. You must look wich one transfer data faster.

+1.

I use two of the LaCie 250GB FW800 drives in mirror mode, so one is continually backing itself up. I copy everything to a third drive every week, which I keep off-site.

Been there... lost months of work. There's no excuse for it with the low cost of drives nowadays.

I recently got one of these 250gb Firewire/USB2 external drives:

Ebay item

Nice sturdy metal case, quiet 7200rpm drive, loads of room, came with loads of cables included, cheap... and quick delivery. Seems like a good quality unit, not a 'refurbished' drive.

Ebay seller has nothing to do with me, just thought you'd be interested in another reply.

Another +1 on the backup front. I just lost my PC about a month ago, and just got up and running with my new Macbook. Lost time, work, a lot. I will never not clone again.

It's more important than that $200 VST you really, really want, especially when something goes wrong and you are left lost, confused, sad, and demoralized.
