Choosing an external hard drive

I'm looking for an external hard drive and i've decided on the Lacie D2. I'm wondering about the different sizes. Is there any benefit at all from having a smaller capacity? i.e. the 500gb model is only about 70% more than the price of the 160gb model so it makes sense to get the biggest one...

but would a smaller drive, say 250gb or 160gb be faster or more reliable?

Thats what i'm trying to say in a really long winded way

I would say get 2 HD with less capacity,and use 1 for backups.
Example 150GB X2

About speed i am not sure,a 7200rpm HD is good.You must look wich one transfer data faster.

I use two of the LaCie 250GB FW800 drives in mirror mode, so one is continually backing itself up. I copy everything to a third drive every week, which I keep off-site.

Been there... lost months of work. There's no excuse for it with the low cost of drives nowadays.

Nice sturdy metal case, quiet 7200rpm drive, loads of room, came with loads of cables included, cheap... and quick delivery. Seems like a good quality unit, not a 'refurbished' drive.

Another +1 on the backup front. I just lost my PC about a month ago, and just got up and running with my new Macbook. Lost time, work, a lot. I will never not clone again.

It's more important than that $200 VST you really, really want, especially when something goes wrong and you are left lost, confused, sad, and demoralized.
