Here's a very short MP3 sample of a drum machine loop.
http://ez-files.net/download.php?file=e ... dd065e48cc
I'm trying to figure out what software/hardware was use to make it - my first thoughts are 303/808...but does anyone have any other suggestions?
I'm going to try and recreate it see
Ta.

It definitely pre-dates the 808.
I believe it is one of the many produced auto-accompaniment drum machines with preset patterns. Some were built into organs and many were stand alone machines.
It would be difficult to be precisely name the one used in this sound file.
You can get that same sound using any of those old drum machines. Find one cheap second hand then sample away.

Sounds like a snippet from the Cluster album 'Zucherzeit'; which was circa mid-70's.
Sounds a little like the Korg Minipops; but more subdued/compressed.....
Is that MP3 snippet from an album? Who's the artist?
Click on Korg Minipops (#20) to download the samples:

Goddam - it does indeed.
Always been a fan of Can & Neu! but never heard of Cluster...so I just spent an hour in the nether reaches of Krautrock over on Pandora.com. First track up sounded just like my MP3!
I've had a listen to the Minipops & I'm not sure it's exactly that...but I'm pretty sure I could get close with those samples.
So - thanks for the links & the new ideas...always cool to walk through some unexpected doors

I'm pretty sure it's a Hohner Automatic.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

I have a massive collection of drum machine kits recorded from the original machines. the hohner automatic fits almost perfectly. the open high hat is what gave it away as it seemed like the easiest sound to identify so I just dug through and played all the high hats till I found one that fit.

hey evernaut,
If you like the Cluster stuff, wait until you hear the first two La Dusseldorf albums..
They were just reissued/remastered last year; combined together on one Cd.
Klaus Dinger was/IS the man.......

Wow. I just downloaded a refill file containing the Hohner Automatic and fired it up - amazingly close! Hats are a giveaway for sure.
Cheers.
And this piece in question is from a website that Neil Finn had a few years ago called Nilfun. I mixed and warped three tracks together from different samples to create the rhythm I was after, and I really love it and have written a song around it....but I'd like to try and recreate the same vibe using my own programmed samples now the track's in shape.

you didn't pay for a refill did you? I totally could have given you a honher kit.
I'm glad you liked it though, I was totally proud of myself for figuring it out.

Listened closely to the Minipops again ( well, as close as you can get with samples ) and it's a tough call between that & the Hohner Automatic. No matter though - the general neighbourhood of smooth and swishy is good enough for me!
Again - thanks for the input on this. It's really opened my ears and made me realise how very musical those analogue drum synths can be.
