Mac Users... HELP!!! Major recording LATENCY issues!

Ok guys, I'm the first to admit that I don't have the most up to date equipment, but there shouldn't be any reason why I can record ONE audio track and monitor in real time with the following equipment:

PowerBook G4 - 1 gHz w/512 MB of RAM
PreSonus Firebox
Mogami mic Cable
GrooveTubes GT 55 condensor mic
...and Ableton Live, of course.

I have played with the latency adjustments.... tried changing the sampling rate from 44100 to 48000... trying a different mic cable, a different firewire cable.... NO LUCK!!! I used to be able to record okay with this thing.

Please, does anybody have any suggestions (besides BUY A NEW LAPTOP, because that's not helpful and it's not an option).

Q 1 - What buffer size is Live set to?
Q 2 and 3 - Do you have delays in the recording audio? What's the setting of the Driver Error Compensation?

Q3 and most important - Have you tried the Firebox mixer for low latency recording?

Thanks a lot bro. I got the DSP mixer working great and now the latency is NOT a problem.

Also, sometimes in the Audio Midi preferences, the firebox can switch to receiving its sync from the device itself to the mac. I've found that switching these erases my latency—my buffer setting is 45 samples, and the latency is no more!
