Calling all mix engineers, advice please........

Post by SubLik » Sat Mar 17, 2007 10:24 am

.... when I get to the mix stage, my highs (as in eq's) are sounding clear, not too harsh though, but say if I compare the sound to say P Diddy's latest album, his highs sound bright but smooth? How do I achieve this, which frequencies should I reduce to make my sound less brittle?

Any advice much appreciated..

Thankx in advance. :)

Without an example it's hard to tell.
Get a decent analyzer, i.e. HarBal and compare with refrence tracks.
But harshness usually comes from to pronounced 6-10kHz. Reduce it with a not too narrow peak filter, and add sparkle with a hishelf.
But before adjusting the treble, cure any muddiness in the signal (@300-450Hz).
Start with wide Qs.

Cheers appreciate the advice. I've got some decent eq's. I'll try out your suggestions.
