I Hope This New Partnership With Cycling 74 Doesn't Mean....
Hello,
Maybe I am jumping the gun a bit here, but I really hope that this new partnership with Cycling 74 doesn't mean DONGLES!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As far as I know, Cycling 74 products use the iLock system, which has put me off buying Pluggo and other stuff from them despite the great reviews and complements they get. I hope that a dongle system will not happen. If it does, then I will most likely not upgrade to the next version of Ableton and will be very disappointed. I hope my worst fears are unfounded.

I'm a max user. Never seen a dongle in my lifeAstral Fridge Magnet wrote:Hello,

It uses a PACE app during the install. But its not any different from Abletons current process.
Its exactly the same.
- Buy app
- Receive serial
- Enter serial
- You get challenge code
- Unlock online/offline

Ok. Excuse me both b0unce and hoffman2k for being a panic merchant. It appears then that I have jumped the gun a bit and made (hopefully) a false assumption. If I can avoid the iLock system, then I will get Pluggo afterall maybe even MAX/MSP. But I suppose you have to be quite good at programming with Max and admitedly, I know nothing about programming, though the idea that you can create virtually anything the imagination allows does seem appealing. So is something like Max then best avoided for ignorant people, like me?

I have no programming experience and i suck at math.
Algebra is near Afghanistan, right?
You actually have nothing to lose with trying it for yourself.
Max comes with the best tutorials in the business and there are max beginner workshops all over the world.
Its a 30 day free trial.
You can do everything unlimited. even build pluggo's and standalone apps.
It was enough to get me hooked.
there are some simpler options to start with before jumping in on the deep end. nord modular is a cheap (via a used micro) way to get into the ins and outs of modular synthesis (its 100% synthesis, though. no sample manipulation possibilities beyond building effects processors). even spending a lot of time with live racks or reason combinators is a good way to get used to patching things up. i personally hit the wall - via lack of organization, math skills and patience - at modifying other people's creations in reaktor to suit my own purposes. max/msp is just one level too deep for me to really get into.Astral Fridge Magnet wrote:So is something like Max then best avoided for ignorant people, like me?
As an ignorant person myself I advise you to avoid it unless you have a lot of time and motivation to commit.Astral Fridge Magnet wrote:Ok. Yep - any sign of PACE/dongles or Pluggo Runtime at any stage and I'll be doing the same. Izotope had to drop the former bugfest POS when the user base started howling....Astral Fridge Magnet wrote:If it does, then I will most likely not upgrade to the next version of Ableton and will be very disappointed. PACE is the same as abletons system.Nod wrote:Yep - any sign of PACE/dongles or Pluggo Runtime at any stage and I'll be doing the same. Runtime is free and operates in the background.
...I did some research on pace some time ago, before buying a pace-protected product because of the negative statements some users made on the forum.
what I found, was that pace was indeed buggy and problematic...a few years ago...on xp especially, it seems to me at least that the nasty bugs have been ironed out, but the legend continues in forum format.
I've had no probs with pace, not even a single hic-up. the current version of ableton live, without pace, crashes more than my pace product. go figure...
I'd advise anyone who's hesitant to buy cycling74 products because of their use of pace to re-consider, email cycling74 direct with your worries, search their FAQ, post your system spec over at their forum etc ...... my cycling74/pace experience has been 100% so far.

Cheers Hoffman - wasn't aware that was actually the case and haven't seen any Abe's posts confirming it. Would be surprised if it was given that most PACE products, iirc eg: Waves, have been rapidly & successfully cracked whereas Live hasn't. As Bounce said there's also some real horror stories of PACE completely fucking DAW's up - maybe old history but it ain't good history either.hoffman2k wrote:PACE is the same as abletons system.
Yep - and after having it on my test sys once, and concluding it's a waste of time, it's never going back onRuntime is free and operates in the background.

I've never understood the amount of disdain towards dongles. Inconvienient yes, but definitely not a deterrent to buy a product. With the amount of piracy and acceptable theft that goes on in the software world, I'm surprised companies haven't made it MORE of a pain to get register and authorize their software. I can honestly say I've paid for every piece of software I own, but I'm sure some reading this are using hacked versions of Ableton, Cubase, etc... I'd say out of 10 friends I have that are producing music, 8 of them are using hacked DAWS and then have the nerve to b%tch about it crashing on them if they move a MIDI note or if their version of Ableton suddenly stops working.

First of all, if you lose it you lose your software. Read the fine print for Cubase or Logic. A challenge/response system is far more "friendly" as usually you can have two installs, so on a desktop and laptop. Should you upgrade your computer, at least with Native Instruments, you can manage your installation by cancelling out an old authorisation and creating a new one (something I hope Ableton will adopt).
Secondly, there are only so many USB ports on a computer. USB hubs don't always work. Often you are advised not to use a USB hub as it could cause problems.
Those two reasons alone make me despise dongles and in fact virtually every magazine review of gear that needs a dongle I have read, the reviewer tends to share my sentiments on the issue.
