When you played with Traktor were you using the BCR? Because if that went haywaire the second time it sounds to me like that may be the culprit. Maybe the bass is shaking it up enough to send overwhelming midi signals?

i can't see how this is possible... unless something in your laptop is loose? like your hard drive pin or something?

Sasha might as well be deaf, that guys booth is absurdly loud. Same with PVD... those guys play in clubs where the bass would shake their adam's apple.

i would suggest something internally that is moving around that normally wouldn't.

screw foam, bring a pillow and see what happens

that's the best point so far

also, I was going to say it could be some kind of power problem, you can get things to help this - if tone deft gets serious for a minute he could probably tell you all about it!

hi all,

to answer your points :

- The BCR is a new element to te equation since i used to play with traktor, so it could be the culprit. if it happens again, i'll try unplugging it and loading again.

- I agree! People use ableton in on bigger systems all the time. I don't know why i'm having this problem. I did fit a new HD which is 7200 as opposed to the standard 5400 that came with the machine. i did think perhaps this was to sensitive for the harsh ebvironment, but that can't be right. ok ... pillow next time!

- heat could be a problem. i have a converted briefcase as a flightcase which i have lined with foam. the FW410 sits in the lower half and the laptop in the upper. when playing i just open this up to 90 degrees and the laptop sits on top of the lower half with the screen but is still protected by the lid (hope that makes sense).

the laptop vents are definitely clear, but it does sit on the FW410 which is in the case and gets hot. however i've been putting a couple of battens between the two to get some air flow.

i'll look into the stands you mention, but the thing is this problem occurs straight away, before things have got too hot.

thanks again for you posts,

B

you sure it's not a dud HDD you put in it? maybe run a few scans etc on it? as a few people have suggested there might be something loose in there you can get replaced under warranty...
hope you figure it out - it sounds like a bastard of a situation!

i remember having problems when loading a set in a special situation:
i worked with my USB soundcard at home. it was selected in the preferences.
in the club i worked with my firewire soundcard. so when starting live the selected (USB) soundcard was not present. live recognised this and disabled audio. normal.
when i tried to open a live set with no soundcard selected i got this slooow and freezy behaviour you described. i had to select the soundcard BEFORE opening the set.
could that cause your problems ?

Tou say it happened as the BCR crapped out, perhaps that was the USB connection momentarily disconnecting.

USB probably has its hooks quite deep in the general running of the computer. Possibly even more if you have a bi-directional MIDI setup running with the BCR.

In my experience, it's a real crapshoot as to how a given combination of platform/application/OS/drivers and hardware will behave with a disconnection, whether its momentary or not).

just my 2c :)

i've only ever had one problem while djing inover two years of using a PB G4.

When I was using vinyl I noticed that when I placed an Echo effect on the efx 500 or no then 1000 I got terrible feedback. So about a year ago I was putting the same effect on a breakdown playing from my G4 with the G4 just on the same table top surface as the decks and the feedback and bass coming into the dj box caused audio drop out! my heart sank!. As soon as I got rid of the effect it came back so the audio was only gone for 1/1.5 seconds but it was enough to make me want to isolate it.

I got a notepal

check http://www.futurelooks.com/159-CoolerMa ... eview.html

The damping is so good and they provide a nice portable platform for you laptop.

I didin't rate the USB powered fans so I didn't connect them but then I noticed the arch shape gap that the notepal created under the laptop and I triedit for a night and my G4 is much cooler.

I hope this helps
