logic

Thank you my friends for your opinions and information on LOGIC.
It seems that many of you feel as I do that it is unintuitive to use, however I would really like to access the plugins. Additionally, learning that the two vintage synths are audio units that may be able to be used in live v.4 is really good news. However I do not know whether that will justify the price of keeping LOGIC PRO 6.
I like what some of you said about using live and logic together, however I don't have a G5- I read that this is the config. that sasha is using for his latest album! HOwever I have been nearly maxing out my powerbook g4867 using live alone, i can't imagine running logic at the same time.

question- has anyone sold their version of LOGIC? I registered my xskey in my name, can I transfer that to someone else?
another question- could someone tell me how (theoretically) to run live as a logic rewire slave and remix my live tracks in logic? (using logic plugins?)
thanks a lot...however I think I may end up selling that program! More and more I need simplicity and intuitive controls...i will keep live 4 and get a sweet controller!! so inspiring. thanks a lot guys
respectfully

Right! You can't fire up Logic and fiddle around with it "to get inspiration" (the way you can do with Live). But if you have a certaiin task that you want to do, Logic provides you with the sharpest Tools.

You should approach Emagic directly to ask about how to transfer you registration to another person.

- Open Logic.
- Press PLAY in Logic.
- Open Live (while Logic sequencer is playing)

This is it! In Live you can set output 1 to 16 at the bottom of each track fader (session view) and audio will stream in perfect sync into the corresponding ReWire bus object in the Logic mixer.

If it doesn't work right away the problem probably is that there are no such ReWire busses in the Logic mixer. Then create them and everything will be fine. The first two busses are named "rwLeft" and "rwRight" - they pick up the master fader coming from Live. Then follows (ReWire) Bus 3, Bus 4 etc.

If you have a slow computer you might have to use the workaround to make long audio files of the streamed tracks. The FREEZE function in Logic does not work for rewire streamed channels so you have to "bounce to disc" track for track. But then you can use the freeze function to offload CPU usage and be able to use more plug-ins than the machine would have been able to handle in real-time.

"Mac program" means consistant user interface and functionality... menus that look and behave consistantly...drop-down menus, alert/dialog boxes that have consistant information structure and type size, Hmmm... like say an Adobe product... Logic was clearly a PC product first, that has been massaged by Apple to conform to some of their Human Interface Guidelines... I think Logic is a very capable product, I just think it's execution is clunky and it feels cobbled together... If you started with Logic maybe that wouldn't be an issue, but a person who had been using Macs for a long time, would notice it immediately... Oh, and then there's learning curve... p.s. I just sold mine, and you can transfer the license... e-mail Emagic support!

Hello!
If you are indeed selling your copy of logic pro, I would actually be interested in buying it from you. To transfer an XSKey, you need to contact Emagic, and they will ask for your details, and the details of the person that you are selling logic to.
PM me if you would like to discuss the price that you could sell it to me for.
Yours
Steve (XPM)

Oh yes! I haven't thought much about it but you're actually right about the Mac menu thing and all. I find Logic a great complement to Live and I hope Apple will rewrite the user interface for next version.

Just for the record - Logic was never aimed at PC. I know because I was using Logic on Mac back when there were not any audio software available for PC. Some years ago they ported it over from Mac to PC, just to reach more users, and later on they also rewrote the audio engine for PC. The P4 CPU optimization was done in paralell with Altivec optimization for Mac G4+. Maybe the Emagic guys had not just been using Mac's enough to get "the Mac concept" back in 1991? The initial idea with creating Logic was to come up with a Mac alternative to the widely used Atari sequencers by C-LAB ;-)

You got me there... I thought it was originally developed on the PC... But in the same respect, you could say it was a German product, which may explain it's rather quirky interface Heh He! Probably the environment that gives Logic such a bad name...

P.S. I've already sold it... to the guy who was interested in purchasing!

Cheers!

uh...

ableton live is a german product. would you say that live has a "quirky" interface as well? i say it's straight dope.

let's lay off the nation-centric generalizations, shall we?

I would say it was elegant simplicity!... and furthermore the first time I saw Live 1.0 I said... Now THIS is the way a software interface should look... I've always loved it... I was thinking I liked the old white version better, but the new grey default is growing on me!

...and More a joke about the engineers mentality... some things are beautiful in their function... regardless what they look like!

I bought Logic Pro about 2 months ago and when Ableton announced Live 4, it was up for sale that very second. I had been using Live and Reason for the past 3 years, ProTools for nearly 4 years. I thought it was time to get the one program that could "do it all" and Logic certaily can. However, despite my confidence that I'll learn the program really quickly, I gave up and thought to myself "there' no way an intellignet human being could have programmed this...". What a fucking nightmare Logic is. It makes Live and ProTools look like dream programs. I couldn't believe I had just spent $1000 on a regretful purchase. I did sell it within a week and the transfer was easy. Just email Emagic and you're good to go.

Logic did have nice synths, plugins and the Rhodes was nice, but I found the best Rhodes/Wurly/Clavinet short of the real thing on the Props website (Electromecanical Refill - FREE!) and now that's covered. Plugins? If you look and do a little research you'll see that hangin' on to Logic because of it's plugins could be a waste of time and money. Renaissance Pack by Waves, PSP Mix-Pack and Vintage Warmer, tons of great VST effects out there you can use with Live, it's not like Logic's EQs and compressors are mind-blowing. Yes, they're good, but there are equally good plugs out there.

You want great synths like the ES1/ES2, they're out there. I have Reason Refills with synth patches that made my jaw drop when I hit the key. You can find these gems, just look harder.

I mean seriously, once I sold Logic (fortunately, I made most of my money back), I felt like the happiest man in the world. A new appreciation for Live surfaced and Live 4 looks very promising. Imagine, running Battery or Kontakt, Reaktor Sessions, directly into Live! Not to mention it'll be optimized for G4 so the idea of mixing entirely in Live is closer to reality (I've made great mixes this way already, it's just nice to know I won't peg the CPU at 80% in the early stages).

f*** the EXS24. Drag&Drop is where it's at. Once you go D&D, there's no going back to menus and sub-menus and automapping weirdness.

Live 4 +Reason 2.5 + ProTools = if I can't make decent music with this, car sales is the way to go.

oh boys and girls, wait till LOGIC7 will be out...then we'll continue this conversation...and those who sold out will feel ....well...you know... but seriously, in this day and age....the tides do change quickly in software land...emagic has a huge resource to tap into these days....

use what you have and not what you have not.... if youve got a lemon, then make some lemonaid with it. It is about music afterall, some like this ,others that, but neither is wack.

The Cosmic Audio Patch Bay

Post by Per Boysen » Fri Jun 18, 2004 7:04 am

I agree with 007. Right now my feelings about owning Logic is that it's an investment in the future. But it has not yet been confirmed that the cool stuff announced at NAMM will make it into Logic 7, it might have to wait until Logic 8. Thinking about elastic audio in the arrange window (like Live, Acid, GarageBand), full support for Apple Loops (you can "unpack" a drum loop to remix it in the original multichannel set-up before packing it down to be handled just like an ordingary sound file - and tagging of loops for data base seatch engines etc etc), the step sequence drum machine etc etc.

But on the other hand I'm a bit critical towards Logic, because it aims at a "one and only" solution. To me the very fact that we now, in OS X, finally have got an operating system that supports audio and midi streaming at the system core level does promise even more for the modular future of computer music. I see all kinds of indipendently developed software popping up and the OS X machine will just become the patch bay to connect them on-the-fly to make music. The old concept "one and only application" will soon be dead. So if they are smart at EmApple they will rewamp Logic into a virtual patch bay for all kinds of stuff. Like some kind of advanced Bidule Thingy. Until that Cosmic Audio Patch BAy is out I guess Live 4 will be the coolest thing around.

On another note, I just realized with quick time 6.5 Apple has locked the playback and burning of songs purchased from the store to I Tunes... Even though I've already paid for them... I can't use a 3rd party program to balance, equalize etc. the songs when I burn them... This has affected a lot of software and pissed me off big time! Not exactly in the spirit of opening up technology... Seems to be Apple's approach these days...

As far as I know Apple (and most big companies) has always been this way. Just look back on how they "killed" BeOS for audio only to introduce the same concept (core audio) with OS X. And the reason GarageBand is such a cool application - BUT CPU-intensive - is only to inspire users to buy new, more powerful, Apple computors. That's the back side.

i fail to see how apple killed BeOS. Because they didn't buy it? Doesn't make any sense.

I sold my Logic Platinum after five years because all I use is Live. I will say one thing, Logic is VERY CPU efficient. I could use many more plugins with less GUI slowness on the same machine.

Whoever said that their 1Ghz pb and their 450Mhz pb are the same speed is looney. I went from a 400 to an 867 and realized about a 1.5 increase in CPU speed.
