Amplitube 2 live vst --> live audio config

I have just got myself an IK Multimedia Stealthplug and Amplitube to use for bringing live guitar into Live. Standalone, Aplitube works fine using the bundled Asio driver and I thought it would be straight forward to load Aplitube up as a vst in Live.
It loads fine as a vst but I am clearly missing something with the audio config that I am using as no audio is actually coming into Live. I have spent the afternoon trying every permutation of audio configurations that I can come up with in Live and in Amplitube without any joy. I can get audio in from Amplitube if I change the main Live audio device to the Asio driver but then I have no audio output.
Can anyone shed some light - I must have missed something very simple with this

so wait your playing live guitar into live and using amplitube as your plug? i do this everday.

set the audio channel to "IN" and the correct input device(ie. channel 1) and put amplitube on that channel. easy enough?

That's how I have set it up but all I hear through is static noise from Amplitube.
Do you use the Asio driver in Amplitube or the DirectX driver?
Do you have the Audio driver configed in Live to use the Asio one?
