New youtube vid from me :-)

Post by Machinate » Sun Apr 08, 2007 2:05 pm

Hi all,

this is a rough cut of our very first showcase, this one at Roland Scandinavia in Denmark. It's in the form of a live jam running Live on two computers, Lemur interaction, Roland TD-20 drums and stuff like that. Full-on improv, crummy generative video projection.

I'd really appreciate some views, comments and all - bring your 5-star clicks

Brilliant! Love the funky/dancy/uptempo bits.

Not so keen on the fall-asleep parts (unless it's for a soundtrack) or the stripy shirt, though. Who dresses you... your mother?

Very nice drumming! Really good job at staying on top of the beat and being dynamic on the drums. The guy on the workstation seems to be a subtle player. The last 5min range on into 6min got really cool by the workstation player. Very organic and Absynth sounding.

So the workstation guy that I'm referring to is Machinate.

Good stuff, is the tempo on both the computers synchronized or are you guys just firing stuff without the grid? Also, is the drummer getting a click track on his headphones?

Very cool Andreas!

I recon the drummer gets some kind of metronome sound in the headset from Live, to keep in sync? I saw the drummer in Ozric Tentacles doo that at a concert here in Oslo, wich was an impressive performance btw!

When you trigger clips and sceenes, do you have a pattern on your trigger hardware that you use for each "song" or do you have any kind of system to keep track of whats were?

Hi all, I'm so glad you liked it! The setup is definitely going to change a lot for future gigs, but I really feel we have a solid framework to work from here.

definitely. He's getting both our mix and a custom quarter-note click:
[*tick* *tock* *tick* *_blank_*] which is odd when you first hear it, but works great once you get into the groove of it.

For now we have left the drum laptop running without sync, so you'll notice a bit of dubbing out when we switch to my rig after his opening solo (Midas desk <-> Space Echo = Gorgeous!) It works well, though.

Hahah, you saw that! That's so great. It's one of the main things I've ever learned about jamming out; Shut the fuck up every now and then - and just listen.

The only two bummers for me about this very first set was that 1) I had made things way too easy for me - a lot of times I just fucking stand there, and 2) We didn't lock into the groove enough to do the "step back thing" all that much.

Thanks for the comments all, I really appreciate this!

is that so he isn't locked in so tight that it becomes stiff? quite some time I tried working with a drummer for a band and in the studio using a metronome the drummer would play soooo stiff and if he wasn't stiff then he was just plain off. we tried a few different kinds of metronomes but couldn't find one that worked for him, always either too stiff or totally off
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

that, and it really makes the *one* stand out.

We don't use traditional "rim shot" type sounds, we use a spectrally noisy Operator bleep, almost like the noises that come of surgical monitors or something.

I would go mental listening to "tick tock tick tock" in a headsett throughout a whole live concert! *tick* *tock* *tick* *_blank_* semes like more eazy to groove with, see the point there!

You could also have a basic beat on a channel thats coworking with sceenes, but just outputs to the drummers headset..

So you made a drum sequencer in Max, and made an interface for it on the Lemur? So you add or eraze steps on the fly, and its syncked to Live, which you also trigger clips from?

Im curious to know how you arrange your sceenes and clips on your controller. How many do you use per "song"?

See on the vid that you play some free style bass on a keyboard, nice!
