Crossfading muting channel?!

Post by hambone1 » Sun Apr 15, 2007 1:26 pm

A massive problem surfaced for the first time when playing live last night, an now it does it all the time.

When launching a track and crossfading into it... no sound! Only muting then unmuting the track would get it to play. This had NEVER happened before last night, and AFAIK, no setting have changed.

Live 6.0.1, G5, OS 10.4.9.

Hi,

Frist thing to try is 6.0.7. Let me know if it still happens then.

No change.

If the crossfader is hard left or right, when a new track is launched and the crossfader moved across, nothing. The meters show activity, and it takes muting and unmuting the track to get sound.

If the crossfader is even 1 CC step from left or right when the first track is launched, everything works normally!

Hi,

I'll report the behaviour in the office, and it will be tested. But in the meantime:

you said that this started to happen yesterday only. Can you remember of any action, installation, hardware change, in the meantime? Are you absolutely sure it was working before?

Or perhaps the crossfader preset got changed.

Nothing changed! Absolutely sure it was working before. I've been gigging since 6 came out without a problem. I do most of the crossfading with automated CC curves, but even with a manual crossfade it doesn't work.

AFAIK, the crossfader preset is irrelevant (I've been using 'transition' since it became available). It only controls the mapping. If the crossfader is hard left or right when the second track is launched, even moving the crossfader hard to the other side does nothing. Only muting then unmuting the track brings it to life.

If I put the crossfader hard left (Deck A), launch track in Deck B, and move the crossfader full right into Deck B - nothing. Normally level activity on the meters in Deck B. Same problem going the other way.

If I put the crossfader hard left, move it a tiny amount to the right, THEN launch the Deck B track, everything works normally. But if it hard left/right when the track is launched, then nothing.

Anyone? Am I the only one with this problem?

Hi,

We tried it here in the office, and it works as expected, using a PPC Mac. It does not mean that there is no bug, but it is hard to identify.

I'm still wondering: if it appeared all of a sudden, can you investigate if anything changed/moved/was installed on the computer just before it started?

Have you tried renaming the Preferences, temporarily (only the preferences.cfg file, NOT the whole folder)? Try also with no controller plugged, as to troubleshoot.

Unplugged controller, deleted prefs... still doesn't work!

Live 5 works fine.

Confirmed!

to reproduce:

- load up 2 samples in 2 different audio tracks

- Set track one to fader side A

- Set track two to fader side B

- Set the track outputs to "Sends only"

- Turn up Send A on both tracks

- Move the fader hard left

- Launch track A

- Launch track B

- Move fader to the right

- WTFF? ;)

The workaround for now: Send the audio to a normal track instead of a send.
The send/return is the culprit and i've confirmed it in 2 scenario's.
Hambone's minefield that he calls a set. And an empty live set in 6.0.7 on my system.

Where can I collect my prize? I also accept cheques

Hi,

Okay I understand. The bug concerning sends is identified and will hopefully be fixed soon, but not by the end of the week I'm afraid.

Hambone, is it what is happening to you? are these tracks routed to 'sends only'?

Yes. I have to use sends only, because I DJ in quadraphonic. Decks A and B, four tracks of loops, and one track of live percussion go to either the front or the rear of the room via sends, and all sends are controlled with BCR knobs.

I do have a workaround. Most of my crossfading is done with dummy clips on BCR buttons (instant, centered, 8/16/32/64/128 beats), so I've adjusted the CCs to 1-126 instead of 0-127, and it works fine.

What I don't understand is why this just started happening! I've been using 6 since it came out, and this wasn't a problem.
