i tried ubuntu on a spare windows box shortly after version 6 came out.
Fantastic OS, but it took me about a week just to find a working quicktime codec that would let me watch movie trailers...and installing it properly was quite difficult.
The idea of linux is great, but it still has ages before it's usable for production purposes.

I thought the mythical perception that MIDI is "tighter" on Atari was bullshit because it only operates at a baud rate of 96 ppqn or something silly by modern standardsMachinesworking wrote:Give it another 5 years....Machinate wrote:nah, not at all - I don't think Live will EVER come out for Linux. Linux IMO will win the serious audio developers eventually. OSX and Windows are already seriously bloated for pure audio work, it will only get worse as the OS gets as simple and candy coated as a video game to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Already it's a simple fact that MIDI is tighter on an Atari, and I really don't see any indication that either MS or Apple are at all worried about that, it's been like that for years.
wouldnt that mean it sounds tighter just because the resolution is so low there's less margin for error?
like quantising at 8th notes instead of 64000 or whatever
maybe it's a good thing where MIDI notes are concerned considering most of us dont really want to have too many notes in our music (who the hell wants to listen to 38400 notes in a beat anyway?)
or am I getting the wrong end of the stick?

I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2 as my everyday partition (then nLite XP sp2 for audio). I switched to OpenSUSE after trying Vista. Vista was nice but a resource hog on my lappy (Centrino 2.0 ghz, 1024 ram). Suse installed (almost) perfectly on the default install - and it does everything in one sweep. Office, Internet, Mail clients and so forth... I think it's awesome for a desktop/internet comp. And it only takes about 4-5 gig of HD footprint - with all apps included.forge wrote:anyone know about openSUSE?

by the time that there ends up being a serious outcry for a less bloated operating system, an outcry that actually frightens windows and osx companies, then windows and osx will likely release slimmed down streamlined versions of their operating systems so as to cash in and to keep us from going linux for free. at that point most people who were outcrying will be satisfied and won't even consider linux because they can just get a lite version of the software they already know and their programs will work on it.Machinesworking wrote:Give it another 5 years....Machinate wrote:nah, not at all - I don't think Live will EVER come out for Linux. .
so no, I don't think linux is coming up in the world any time soon even if there is a serious outcry. And the simple fact is that these companies are willing to spend billions making sure that we don't switch. what kind of marketing campaign does linux have?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

The thing about Ubuntu is that it aims to do all the tweaking for you, and present the result in a lickable package. It's progressed an incredible deal since the first release two odd years ago.forge wrote:and open sourcejaffadj wrote:its free
but there's gotta be more reasons than that
it really does look like it's the OS for tweakers though
people who just want to get on and make music or whatever might be better off just sticking to the big guns
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

well, so far it's just hanging - it's run oncenoisetonepause wrote:The thing about Ubuntu is that it aims to do all the tweaking for you, and present the result in a lickable package. maybe it is something to do with the vista bootloader but I'm well past be arsed by now
I was curious, but this is really just a timewaster distraction for me
I'm actually no minding alot of the new things in vista really, there are definitely some things on it that are long overdue (that OSX did, and aesthetics too) but it's such a resource hog for less than 1-2 year old machines, and so badly unsupported at this stage it has major flaws
but now I'm in my routine of mainly uni work and internet and I've turned off the bullshit security crap I'm appreciating the new search etc
one VERY cool thing it does no is allow you to shrink a partition - so no need for partition magic etc - if you want to use some spare space as a new partition (like for say all this stupid timewasting installing OSX86 and Linux I've been doing!)
ah what the hell, I am an IT student now so I guess it doesnt hurt that I'm getting all geeky and trying new OSes and hacks
but I should really do some work!
