For Those of You With Small Keyboards, here is a way...

here is an easy way to remember which keys are where when you are switching the octaves on your little midi controller. it is probably not a novel idea but it works for me when i have samples mapped out all over the place. it is an easy color coding system. for 2 dollars you can buy some little color stickers at the office supply shop.

in my case I used

blue as middle C and down (C3, D3, E3, etc.)

red as C2 and down

yellow as C1 and down

green as C4 and down

i only put dots for three different octave shifts on the keyboard, you can of course do more.

the row farthest back on the keys shows placement for when you shift back an octave on your controller

the row farthest out on the key is for when you shift forward an octave.

and the row in the middle of the other two rows is for when the midi controllers octave is in the center.

this way you can easily find say that kick on C1 or that bass line mapped across C4.

i put an extra row of dots on the front of the controller for an extra reminder, those are for C3 down to C4 which happens to be the impulse mapping.

tweak it to your own taste, but it truly helps work flow.
