Config File?
Config File?
I heard there was a config file for ableton I could backup, and then reload after a reformat so I wouldn't need to unlock live and use up an unlock. I can't remember what it was or where it was.

apparently you can do this. save the file from:
C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Application Data\Ableton\Live 6.0.7\Unlock
then when you reinstall you have to start ableton and let it ask you if you want to unlock. the trick seems to be to not do this when it asks you which lets live create the unlock directory structure again.. shut live down, then put your unlock file back in the unlock folder and restart live and it should work fine. i have to admit, i haven't done this but i did read it in the forum recently and filed it away in the back of my head for next time...

I believe that if you format it wont works.
If so why people still reach the unlock limit cause they format ?
As far as I know, the Ableton copy protection is known as a pretty good one. I'm not a copy protection specialist but in my head it's a total nonsense to base it on one file named unlock.
maybe i'm wrong

because the registration is based on your hardware footprint, and if that hasn't changed it'll still match your machine and you can do the unlock?I believe that if you format it wont works.
i'm pretty sure it's a little more complicated than having a file called 'unlock'. i'm assuming that the generated unlock code relates to your both your product serial number and the computer hardware it's being installed on. if you change your HDD or whatever, your machine won't match the unlock anymore and you need to re-unlock... as i said, i haven't tried this yet, but it sounds feasible to me...If so why people still reach the unlock limit cause they format ?/quote]
because they don't know to do this?
