pianos and triangles - a progressive/minimal track

this track is nearing completion, but id love to hear what you guys think before i declare it there.

its probably the first real track i've spent enough time on to call it a proper song.

I think it's bloody great! I'm not too keen on the ochestral-type progression sample coming in, as it breaks a lot with the overall minimal feel, but when it's filtered out and the delay sound from it just hangs there it's really good.

thanks guys! everyone ive played this to so far seems pretty divided on the piano part i made, some people like it, others thinks it clashes. i might try equeing it to remove a few frequencies. see how it goes.

wait sorry, are you talking about the piano that is there pretty much from the beginning, or that long synth that drops in after halfway through the track.

The sound that starts filtering in at 3:43... I like initial intro, lowpassed all the way in, but then it starts over with another filter setting and whatnot, and I feel it kind of breaks with the overall minimal feel, you know?

Yes, the piano part clashes harmonically with the rest - that's good! So do the two bass sounds and so on. It's minimal and atonality is great every once in a while.

yeah i agree with that section. once it comes in and then the octave changes, that bit isn't so smooth.

I like that filter opening quite a bit. The whole track is very original and well put together. All I would change were it mine is to get rid of the constant rapid panning L-R some of those instruments are subjected to (mostly towards the end); it doesn't do much besides confuse me as to where that sound is placed - kinda makes me dizzy for no reason. Sometimes I think you actually have sounds completely 180 degrees out of phase and that does no good for anything at all frequencies. I like playing with those pan fx too but once in a while with a certain rhythm linked to the beat.

I would also make all drums more present. They don't cut through the mix as much as the instruments do. The analyzer actually shows a steady decline down to barely anything left around 8k but you can tell that just listening. Compress them (as little as you have to), make the kick click abit more, eq them up around 1.8k, make them louder. There is a nice hight hat loop in the background and it needs to be louder.

Do all that and see how your bassline sounds - it will probably be dying for a little extra meat in the upper frequencies as well - perhaps a tube distortion or saturator will do it, but see how it does after you boost all those drums.
