No Midi after waking up from sleep /need to run @Exhibitions

Post by zs_ » Wed Apr 25, 2007 5:56 pm

Hi,

I want to use Ableton LIVE for an interactive sonic exhibition. Therefore it would be great having the ability to put the Mac Mini to sleep with just a press of a button (while Live is running!).

However, with my USB Midex 1/3 device, MIDI isn't working in Live anymore when waking up. The device is recognized, but nothing is received (although MIDIMonitor shows that in principle it should work). I have to restart LIVE to get it running again. (Thanks to LIVE 6, at least the MIDI settings are now saved and restored :) )

I would be very thankful if anyone could reply if you have a MIDI device that supports this ( deep sleep / waking up / still workin in LIVE ) on a mac. Maybe it's just my Midex :?

Or is it normal that LIVE does not recognize MIDI devices after waking from sleep?

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences!

Best regards,
Michael

Edit: I just tested it with my (USB) Korg microKONTROL, and it's the same there... even worse, LIVE crashed after waking up :-\

Edit: changed topic name (added exhibition)

i have the similar issues with my midex 8 but I don't remember it losing connection or being un-recognised in Live if my powerbook went to sleep; moreso it would need to be plugged in before booting the machine for LIVE to recognise it and utilise it. Even if I switch user accounts on my powebook whilst live is running and I go back to the account with live running it seems to hang and I need re-boot so I don't know if there is much of a way round this with the steinberg midi interfaces. Just thought I'd share my experiences if it is of any help.
macbook 2.16 ghz, live 6...studio with gear now gathering dust.

Hi,

thanks for your feedback!

I guess chances are pretty low that someone here does use Live at Exhibitions, but if it's the case, I will report back in some days.
I'm writing my own Program for OS X to get notification of sleep/wake events. It will then terminate and relaunch live, all automatically. It will also be able to monitor the availablility of one MIDI device. Testings are good so far.

I will release the program incl. source soon and leave a notification here.

Anyway, I think if Ableton wants to collaborate with Cycling, they should really care about this. It is absolutely required for an exhibition system that it runs when you power the PC and it stops when you shut it down. You can't tell no exhib space running people how to setup a MIDI dialogue twice a day...

Cheers,
Michael

but you can tell exhibition staff to properly shut down and turn off a machine every day. Then it's just a matter of having a launch script...

Why shut it down or put it to sleep at all?

I use a Mac Mini at work, and it hasn't been shut down or restarted in two months or so. It just keep working, and doesn't seem to get too warm.

wow, there's a lot more feedback since I added the keyword "exhibition" :)
great!

yes, that's what I'm trying to do ;)
But I'd also like to have working sleep mode, because it would be the most simple solution of all.

And moreover: if there's no monitor, it's getting very complicated (because in my case it's no mouse/keyboard work, but has a sensory device attached, therefor the mac mini is sitting somewhere below the ceiling or hidden behind a wall with no monitor attached).

At least I'm very happy that Live 6 now restores it's midi settings. With Live 4 this has been a pain in the ar§e when a virutal port has been lost somehow :-\

Besides what machinate sais, mainly because mine gets pretty warm. There's a lot of CPU intensive stuff going on and because of that it's a security risk (It's not my intention to burn the museum) and besides that it's pure power wastage. I know I can't save the climate, but at least I can think of saving some energy where possible ;)

Michael

okay, I won't release any sources because the solution that's working for me now requires admin-authorisations and introduces system security leaks.

However, I really wish there would be a preference setting for live where these annoying "do-you-want-to-save-your-changes" and "restore-last-setup" could be disabled. It would make li(f/v)e a lot easier for automated launch/shutdown tasks

best,
Michael
