i'm trying to figure out how to keep from having to click the little arrow in the midi clip with the mouse, then jump to my keyboard, play x bars, then hit the spacebar to stop recording, then go into my midi clip to clean up all the extra time at the beginning that elapsed between clicking the little arrow and me starting playing.
Is there a way to just start recording the midi clip when I start playin'?

Map a high note on your keyboard (i.e one that your are not going to play in your recording) to the slot you want to record your midi clip into. Or get yourself a midi foot trigger.......
Make sure Overdub is switched off unless you want to add stuff to your recording as it loops....
Set Global Quantise to 1 bar. If you have a drum loop playing use that as your count in....other wise use the metronome. Hit your trigger note in the bar before you want to record and off you go on the one of the next bar.
Hit the trigger note again in the bar before you want to end and your newly recorded clip will start looping.
