MIDI Newbie Question - Live + UC-33e

Post by randy915 » Fri Apr 27, 2007 3:08 am

Hi, I'm completely new to this whole MIDI thing but I recently purchased an Evolution UC-33e and a M-Audio Fast Track Pro. So I plugged both into the USB and after everything was detected I loaded up Live 6.

In PREFERENCES / MIDI SYNC, I chose UC33e for CONTROL SURFACE 1. Input and Output remain at NONE. Dump button is disabled. I closed the window and when I move the slider the green box next to MIDI lights up.

But when I click the MIDI button, assignable areas turn blue, I tried to click on master volume and moving the slider, nothing happens. This is where I start to get confused. How do you program this thing? The manual is confusing and I have this strange feeling I need to get a 5-pin MIDI cable to plug into the Fast Track Pro?

Please help me! Thanks

Make sure it's in MIDI learn mode, the UC-33e is set to Cubase by default. MIDI learn is preset 33, I believe.

If I may make a suggestion, you should post questions like this to the other forums first - MIDI issues like yours are rarely issues with Live itself. It took me a little while to get the first device I used with ABleton Live to work as well, and it was the very same problem

Thanks for replying. I noticed that in PREFERENCES the Input and Output for the "UC33e" is labeled none and the available options are SB Audigy 2 ZS MIDI IO, USB Audio Device, and USB Audio Device [2]. I have it set on None. Is that going to be an issue?

No, but make sure under the MIDI Ports section you have Remote set to on for your device. If you only have one port listed, set Track to on as well. I'm going by memory here as I am at work right now, but that should have you ready to go.

i dont understand the "none" part, but USB Audio Device and USB Audio Device (2) are your UC33e ports. enable both, or just the first one actually as that is the actual USB port, meaning this is the direct signal from the UC to Live and vice versa that's going throught the USB cable.
USB Audio Device (2) represent the actual MIDI ports on the UC. You would use (2) if you had an external MIDI synth or drum machine that you wanted to control with the UC.
Make sure both, or just the first one, are set to [Remote] under MIDI preferences. That way you will be able to control things in Live. The reason you're not getting anything is because [Remote] is off...
