Live Launch gets stuck and never loads. this hapened to U?

When i launch live; any version of live 6, it appears to load, and then never does. The same thing just happened on my desktop computer about two days after it started on my laptop. Can an external hard drive attract a virus that would cause this? the only thing i did that compares to the two is that i plugged the external into my laptop (which i use for internet) and then plugged it back into my desktop. is there any good free software that can check for viruses? i dont use internet for much other than e-mail. serious. no porn! haha. but this seriously sucks. I need help soon! im supposed to go on a long 24 hour bus trip and a working copy of live on my laptop would rock my world.
is this a virus? Live 5.2 works fine on my desktop. Dont have 5.2 installed on the laptop.
Im running windows xp home on both laptop and desktop.
destop: 2 gigs ram, 2.8 ghz.
laptop: centrino duo 1.66 ghz, gig of ram (2x 512)

Could it be possible that you've chosen some weird location for your VST folder, like your C: drive?

Try deleting the preferences.cfg file for Live 6

my vst folder is inside my program files folder in the c drive. but ive been using that area for years. ill try deleting the preferences.cfg -thank for the advice. faster response than the ableton support team!

o found some preferanc.cfg files.... but they didnt seem related. i delete them and nothings changed.
its so weird... this just came out of no where. live was working fine the other day. now it appears to load forever-suspened in time or something.

One of the commonest reasons for Live to crash on loading is a VSTi that Live takes exception to. Try renaming vstplugins to something else, create a new (empty) vstplugins folder and see what happens. If this works, you'll then need to move back the VSTis one by one. Alternatively, if you can date your problem back to adding a new VSTi, try removing this from the folder. Best of luck!

weird...
it seems absynth 4 is the problem on my laptop and fm8 is the problem on my desktop. im going to post another post based on these with ableton users. thanks for the help guys!

on some pc system, every instances ( *.dll) of both fm8 and absynth 4 crash live once at startup.

It means that you have to kill the live process in the task manager and relaunch it for every vsts instances.

Once every damn vsts pieces have crashed live once

everyhting will go fine

As far as I know

the probs comes from NI and not Ableton

( what a surpirse...)

so i have to crash it one by one? so launch without crash, then add absynth.dll to folder.... make it crash. then restart it... and repeat? until every vst crashed once? this sounds absurd :S

leave the vsts there

live will start

on the loadup screen

he will stuck for example on absynth4.dll

crash live

restart

absynth4.dll pass

the next instance ( absynth2x8.dll maybe) will stuck

crash live

restart

both 1 and 2 will pass

next will stuck

and so on

I know this is absurd

but try you'll see

all systems I saw doing this were ok after that stupid init sequence

I'm posting my question here to since i have an error that's gets close to that...

"I have a pretty strange error, i had absynth 4 for a few weeks now, at first everything worked fine but since last week absynth and ableton keeps quiting when i try to use the menu of absynth (perform, patch, effect, attributes,...) the only thing that works now is the browser that pops up first. It also happens when i use the standalone so i know it isn't ableton.. anyone who would know a sollution to this, i already tried removing absynth completely and installing again but with no result. "
