Constant Unexpected Quitting
Constant Unexpected Quitting
I just sent this to ableton, but I figured I'd give this a shot as well:
I have a Macbook Pro running Mac OS 10.4.8, and I purchased Live 6.0.5 about a week ago. Since I've started using it, it has frequently unexpectedly quit. When this happens, Live simply disappears from the dock, without an OS X dialog telling me it unexpectedly quit. So far, I've noticed a few things that trigger the quitting without exception:
Any time I try to open a .alp file. As in, trying to install lessons, or instruments, or anything from the download section from the ableton website. A dialog box will come up asking me if I want to install it, then another box will say "preparing installation," and then Live disappears. If I'm lucky, the file will partially install, but never to the point of giving me anything substantial that I can use.
Also, any feature within live that relates to these files tends to trigger a quit. For example if it tells me that I am missing samples or lessons, and gives me the option of an automatic search, clicking on "go" for the search triggers it to quit.
Another trigger is the record enable button on the individual tracks. Whenever I click to enable a track to record, live disappears.
Another one that I just accidentally discovered while writing this email is dragging files within the Live device browser. I just accidentallydragged something in the instrument rack into another folder, and Live disappeared. I tried it again dragging another instrument to a different folder, and the same thing happened.
These are the only things that have triggered it constantly wihtout exception. Occasionally, pressing the hot-swap presets button on a device triggers it, and one time it was triggered when I pressed apple+S to save.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated... I'm sort of in a time crunch here. Thanks!

I can't help, but wanted to add my voice. For some reason over the last few days I've had more issues with 6.05 suddenly disappearing than ever before. Just randomly, poof, it's gone. I've never had any issues with Live EVER doing this until the last couple of weeks or so, so I don't know what's causing it. A completely Live 6 reinstall did not solve it.
The only things I've changed on my laptop are removing my Virus TI drivers, and installing OSX 10.4.9. I have a sinking feeling this has something to do with the latest Mac OSX.

RE:
if I understand the question correctly...
Before I had dragged the Live icon to the dock, it just disappeared. Now that live is in the dock, the arrow underneath it disappears, i.e. the application is just suddenly no longer active. When I said "disappears," basically what I meant is that it unexpectedly quits, but OS X never recognizes it with a dialog box saying "The aplication ____ just unexpectedly quit, etc."
But I guess to answer your question, I opened live both from the dock and from its location in the applications folder

Ok. Yes, i've seen this problem on and off. Doing a repair permissions from Disk Utility appears to make it happen less frequently, although it might just be a correlation rather than causative effect I'm seeing.
Do you have a lot of plugins? You might try swapping some out and seeing if there is one that is causing a problem. I tried this awhile back, but I couldn't determine one that was directly responsible, mostly because my spontaneous quitting was rather random.

Hi,mbernard wrote:I tried the disk utility permissions fix... no luck. The quitting seems to be just as persistent as before. Thanks for the tip, though.
have you copied the Live folder to your Application forlder? It is pretty basic, but just in case: you should not run it from the Dmg image.
All of you who have such issues, after basic troubleshooting, should send details to [email protected], according to what is asked on that page:

Just wanted to add myself to the list of users experiencing many, many unexpected quits.
I try to keep good damage control habits-- save often, etc. I have been using Live almost every day for the past few months, mostly in arrangement view. Lots of envelope tweaking and midi-->Plogue Bidule VSTi.

God damn it.
It's happening to me aswell and I'm on PC.
Songs play for a bit and then "POOF" its gone.
Then after the gui is gone, I have an annoying sound and have to
restart my computer to get it to stop .
Was working on stuff for gig tomorrow..........
Shit.
ATM I cannot work with Live at all.

Tried 6.05 and actually got to render a track. Then BANG!Anyone have any success by reverting back to an earlier release of Live 6?
Back to not being able to get through a whole track.
I've sent an email to Ableton, but forgot to send the 'crash file'.
I have tried to send it since, but my emails are being rejected as SPAM

edit- I have also moved all vst's out of folder and still, Live is crashing like a bitch. Anyone with any ideas ?
