Announcements (new album releases, new events)

Post by nebulae » Thu May 10, 2007 2:55 pm

Several things to announce, in no particular order:

1. www.laptopdeathmatch.com - next deathmatch on Saturday at the DoubleWide in Dallas; I plan on doing a song entirely live-looped with all sounds coming out of a bass. I'm not promising that it'll sound good, but it'll definitely be interesting.

2. New Anjunabeats compilation released ("Volume 5") - double album from the saviors of trance, Above & Beyond. I know trance gets a bad rap, but honestly, this is the absolute cream of the crop...info and listen here: http://www.anjunabeats.com

3. New Travis record out, "The Boy with No Name" - f-ing fantastic...a return to the glory of the "Invisible Band" with shimmering guitars and lovely vocals. Check out all the songs at http://www.myspace.com/travis and the new video at http://youtube.com/watch?v=u2hYn_4yuhc

4. New Bjork album out ("Volta") - is it me or has she gone so far into "creative" territory that her music is no long accessible? What happened to the fantastic stuff of legends like on "Post" or "Homogenic" ???

5. New Armin mix out - "A State of Trance 2007" - or as I like to call it, "A State of Complete Boredom 2007"

Feel free to comment, in any particular order.

on a tangent, I picked up NIN-Year Zero....and returned it. I got Volta with the refund. good move.

Yeah, Year Zero didn't do much for me either. And even worse, it sounded "thin" to me...almost too digital.

My wife says Volta will grow on me over a few weeks, so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt, but I miss Bjork's creative-yet-accessible days.

AMEN to the "thin" remark. I had actually written a lengthy diatribe on the NIN topic of accessibility and how its ruining his output imo, but figured it would be a bit of a thread-jack. But I definatly thought the entire album sounded flat/thin/weak ... I'm speculating here, but could this be for better mp3 playback or something ?

I don't think MP3 has anything to do with thin...it's all about how it was produced.

I think the thin sound comes from overcompression and bad distortion. Keep in mind, there's good distortion and saturation, but thats not what happened in Year Zero. The distortion is flat and actually sounds NOT angry, which is not Trent's purpose or goal. The vocals sound like they were recorded on shit mics. The guitars could have come out of Refx Slayer or something cheezy like that. The drums sound like bad Battery 3 samples.

I don't know what happened, but I hate it when good records get recorded like crap. These guys know better...

Conversely, if you listen to a well-recorded warm and thick record, whether it's mp3 or wav won't make a difference in the warmth of the album. Any Cardigans record will sound great, even down to 128kb mp3.

Hey, cool! Come introduce yourself to me, so we can meet in person !! :)

Yes, Sat May 12, and I'll be there around 8:30ish...they usually don't start earlier than 9pm. Ethios4 and his wife will be coming down from Oklahoma, so you can meet them too.

Update: the DeathMatch starts at 10pm. Anyone coming should be there by 9:30, just in case we start early.

Upon further listening, I have to say this ASOT 2007 is growing on me, and is better than anything Armin's put out in a few years. It's prolly the past baggage that kept me from liking the new record...overall, it's a smooth and delicate sound, which has it's purposes.

The Anjuna record is just sick!!!

And don't forget the deathmatch tomorrow night :)
