Irony ::M-Audio FW1814 Problem:: Laptop won't recognise HELP

Have you tried messing around with the 1814 software?

Ok now it shows up in sys profile as;

Still can't see it under 'Sound' in the System preferences and also it won't show when I click the M-Audio icon in System Pref either. Still says it's not there

under utilities- audio/midi set up. I do not believe that this device adheres to any standard proocol like USB, and it is not plug and play, so it has to be selected in here.

In finder, under GO, in utilites, audio/midi.

I got these instructions from M-Audio;

Try downloading and installing the Mac OS X 10.4.9 "combo" update. Several manufacturers have reported problems with the Automatic Software Update, and this "combo" update ensures that all operating system files are installed and up to date; and does NOT require that for you format and re-install everything. Leave the 1814 disconnected for now.

After installing the "combo" update, delete any M-Audio Folders in the Mac's Startup items folder (Macintosh HD>Library>StartupItems) and then follow these steps to reinstall the 1814 drivers [Please follow them exactly]:

1. Repair disk permissions. [Hard drive > Applications > Utilities Folder > Disk Utility] – Choose Macintosh HD when the utility launches and click repair disk permissions.
2. Uninstall the FireWire driver using our latest driver download - Make sure that the device is disconnected.
3. Install the latest driver.
4. Repair disk permissions.
5. Shut down, connect the FW1814 and restart.

When you reconnect the FW1814 you do NOT want to use the AC power adapter. It will get all the power it needs from the FireWire cable.

BUT, they didn't work. Not once has it been recognized on any of the computers I have tried. What a piece of shit. It's going back!! Motu Ultralite here I come...

How are the Motu Ultralites on PPC Macs?

I just went through this process when trying to install a ProjectMix to interface with M-Powered. The ProjectMix wasn't showing up as a HUI interface so I did a clean uninstall of both M-Powered and the M-Audio FW Drivers. After re-installing it worked perfectly fine. Don't know what exactly is happening to cause that problem, but there's a solution.

Didn't that suck? I mean, how is a typical consumer supposed to be able to do that? I had just bought my G5 and there I was fiddling in the terminal:roll:

I think that if nightrider goes motu it would be nice. However, if he is going to get the macintel in the near future, I would just stick with it (if he gets it working). I would highly suggest that he do what we did since it worked for us. I do not remember the steps unfortunatley. It has been about 2.5 years.

I don't mind a little troubleshooting. The nerd side of me needs to get its fix every now and then. I don't think you can really single out M-Audio for this issue. I'm more than certain that every other manufacturer has issues somewhat similar to this with any of their interfaces. No manufacturer is perfect and that's why every company has tech support (even if the people on the phone give the "wrong" answers).

But yes, I do agree with you that this is a crappy problem and hopefully M-Audio can come up with a better installer for the Firewire Family interfaces.

Well unless it works in the next 24 hours it's going back. Any chance you guy could fish out the instructions to do the uninstall reinstall in the terminal. I've tried everything else...

I don't remember, did you get around to checking in your utilities and making sure that there was a connection to this device? And selected it?

Sorry, got no advice about the 1814 but to answer your last question, I'm using an Ultralite on a Powerbook and it works sweet.

(Before the MOTU I was using a different interface which had been fine but then, for no apparent reason, started to screw up. Like to guess which company made it...?)

maybe the instructions I found on the net weren't as detailed. I just used the installer that I had down loaded earlier.

18 minutes I guess I've got good at doing this shit in the last few days

I've checked in Audio/Midi a number of times and also in Sys Pref. Sound section with no success.

Alright, I have a picture of a generic device under midi in the audio midi setup. It says FW1814 on it. It is right next to my the iac driver and a symbol representing the network.

Do you see this screen? Can you see a box that says fw1814?

If not, I highly recommend unistalling and trashing everything in your computer that came fro maudio. This can be done from the terminal, as was suggested to me by the helpful maudio tech. It requires a few very careful steps, as working within the terminal can do bad things when you make mistakes.

Afterwards, I would suggest first installing the recent pro-update from apple http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/ ... ort40.html just in case you run any of their apps. This is a bit of a stretch, but in lieu of reinstalling the whole operating system for an earlier build that may work better with an earlier driver, it can't hurt to take measures to make the OS happy.

Then, if the combo driver is not the first driver that you used, I would try it. I believe that it is what I am using on my PPC right now, as well as my macintel.

If you got this device for $300 or less, then I recommend trying to make it work. Now that I am using it on my macintel I feel like it's worth the $425 I paid for it new. That and it introduced me to Live Delta 2.
