audio hangs during playback

Post by marvinyl » Mon May 07, 2007 1:18 pm

I guess this topic has been generally discussed several times in the forums but i haven't found anything specific yet...

I'm using live (6.0.7) on the intel macbook pro, 2 gigs of ram and the m-audio ozone for midi in as well as audio out.

my arrangements have not more than seven or eight midi-tracks, mostly impulse or operator-based. in the session window, everything works fine - playback isn't interrupted when turning on the tracks.
but when i'm trying to playback a full arrangement, it seems that live "loads" every single track at the moment it starts. this causes audio interruption up to one second... is there a way (maybe general settings) to avoid such annoying events?

thanks in advance,

marvin

well .. it seems that i'm the only one having the problem.

the answer from ableton support:

"In fact, there is a small memory manging issue with Live and OS X,
causing something which feels like Live has to "warm up" a little in
order to run smoothly (until enough memory is assigned to the application).

Please to run the CPU test in the audio preferences, activate the test
tone for a second (then deactivate it). Now start your arrangement, is
it starting right away this time?"

...it didn't work for me, but hopefully it will be fixed with one of the next updates.

the cpu test can be done by clicking the test tone button in live's preferences/audio menu. i've tried it with 50% cpu-load but as i said it didn't help.

the best way is probably to play every clip within the whole live set before you stand in front of the crowd.. and keep live running the whole evening :?

:( thats not really the point though, is it? Oh well, I really hope they will fix this problem in the next release as I have quite some live gigs comming up, and I am NOT going to play a "Playback" set...

i don't think that you're forced to act like milli vanilli - live should play without any audio dropouts if you just activate every (midi)-track shortly before starting your session.
i don't know if the problem occurs even with pure audio-tracks and i'm not sure if it's a problem with mac os x resource management. i've tried to find the reason by inspecting the output of the "top"-command in mac os terminal-window when playing my tracks ... the cpu starts around 12% and climbs up to 26% this happens even when live has "warmed up" - whatever that means..
anyway, i hope there will be more information coming soon - i can't believe that no one else in this forum is affected by this issue.

I have almost the same setup as you and have many glitches. first the audio will drop out completely at times, and my audio card shows that it has lost the link with the computer.
also when I select a new line of clips to run it always lags and hangs for a second before it plays, throwing the whole groove out of whack. until I play all the clips then It seems to remember them and won't hang up. I'll let you know if I find anything

Hi,

Could you test using the internal soundcard of the MBP, just to see if the problem would come from the USB audio card? Second thing to try is the other USB port on the MBP, to plug the Ozone. IT happens with some other M-audio cards that the USB port you choose is crucial, from some user reports.

Hi,

I've got the same issue both with the Ozone (tested on all usb-ports) and the internal soundcard. It seems that the problem has nothing to do with the size of the project, it occurs with 700kb projects as well as with 700mb. In every test-case I also pushed the audio-pref's test-tone button to simulate cpu-load with 50%.

regards,

marvin

Are you saying that the audio is playing back fine in Session View, but not Arrangement?

IF so:

Are you using any markers in Arrange View?

Try deleting them and tell us what happens

it's amazing - i've got the problem in session view as well as in the arrangement now. no markers there - sometimes i recognize a drop-out when turning on the sends.
it fells like live's performance is getting worse every day. i turned off wlan, dashboard.. everything.

thank you guys for trying to help me on that issue.

regards
