Whoever owns beatport is making a mint , A MINT...
the sums are ridiculous - for example a track costing £1.50, the artist is going to be making 37p unless he has a co writer (in whihc case they make 19p each), whilst beatport take a whipping 75p a sale... Now i know thats probably better than CD/vinyl royalties etc , but the volume of sales through beatport are making someone somewhere very wealthy...

I've said it before, and no doubt I'll say it again: I won't shop at Beatport until they stop their xenophobic pricing policy.

If you buy from the UK you'll pay about twice what a purchaser in the US will pay. :evil:

(The rest of the EU "only" has to pay about an extra 50% more.)

It's nothing to do with the exchange rate, and everything to do with greed.

You're kidding me? I totally thought it was up to the label or artist as to what the charge is on a song. This isn't based on personal experience within beatport but based on that seems to be the general rule on every other site. So are they just throwing darts over at beatport? Maybe they hired some executives from the oil industry.

Since the same track, in the same format, costs different amounts on different sites, it must be up to the site...

Edit: Or maybe I misunderstood you? How much the label charges Beatport (and therefore how much the artist gets paid) is up to the label. How much Beatport charges the customer is up to Beatport.

When beatport last hiked up the prices, or launched the seperate sites, can't remeber which, they gave a bit of a break down of the pricing. There are 3 price categories. £1.99, £1.49 and £1.29. New releases or charted tracks are 1.99, once they go over two weeks old they drop to 1.49 and back catalogue is 1.29. That's what I can vaguely remember, I might be wrong.

Sounds about right. But releases tend to stay "new" (i.e. expensive) longer than is reasonable (e.g. 8 weeks, not 2). And if you buy, say, a back catalogue track as a WAV it'll cost $2.49 if you're in the US and £2.29 (about $4.55!) if you're in the UK.

Where are you getting these numbers?

And I'm pretty sure the credit card companies are getting the majority of the money for these transactions anyway.

They do screw UK customers with their pricing ,but i have to say that having tried at least 6-7 other sites I find they have the biggest ,widest selection of tracks especially in the tech house ,minimal genres. It is also a lot easier and quicker to preview 100's of tracks in a session.

You have to dig deep to find the gems ,there's absolutely no point in listening to the top 10 lists as they are usually shit and pass by the good stuff.

Remember the old saying that 90% of everything is crap ,for beatport it's probably nearer 95% but still it's never been easier for a DJ to get the quality tracks they want but they just have do dig that bit deeper.

Jonas is huge sad dork. He's in Denver clubs once in a while and I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. Same with Little Mike who is in Berlin now. How these dorks got successful is beyond me. Their sad House sucks ass. And suddenly Little Mike is now Minimal huh? give us all a break. Phrunky Recordings..... yeah only their circle of friends they all run with would like that crap. Their whole click is only cool to them. Otherwise it holds no water in the real techno world, but they think it does. Not.

The 1.50 is wrong (should be 1.49).. but beatport do a 50/50 with labels - most labels will do a 50/50 with artist(s) - so if theres 2 artists they have to go 50/50, on the 50/50 of the 50/50. Thats been my dealing with Beatport for all the tracks i've released through it.

why don't you download form the US site then you pay the US rate $1.99>$2.49 which is equivalent to £1>£1.25 UK. You get the odd territory restricted tune but not that often. I buy funk, breaks, downtempo, Uk hip hop and d&b mostly, my prefered sites for download are (320kbps singles)

I agree with the diggin' bit in this thread, if you DJ find the tunes YOU like and think others should hear too. If its for personal use then if you love music don't you find it interesting to listen to new stuff? surely you can tell pretty quickly if you don't like something?
When i sifting though genres i what i look for is production quality 1st and foremost, this way i can choose pretty quickly if i will like or dislike a track and either investigate further or move on. if its good then i look for beats/bassline/melody/hook, if there is and its good then i look for progression and then continuity in the track, if there aint move on.
You don't need to listen to the whole track, if you've been diggin for a long time, you kind of know where to skip to ie. intro, build, drop, break.
If i find a track i like i'll usually check the tracks/artists on the label as they tend to chose 'a sound' they want for their releases and any other work by the artist.

I am a fan of beatport. you get the wav option full studio quality wav. The best possible sound.
