If this is sarcasm you need to add a smiley.nathannn wrote:i dont even understand what 4/4 or 3/4 is
im guessing 4/4 would be every four bars there is a drum fill or every 3/4 there is a fill
to me it only has to do with druming and nothing else.. ever time some one mentions a song that has wierd timing i tap my feet and try to see if i can get a cymbal hit in every four bars and have it sound right.. and everytime i am able to.
so whats the point of these time structures?
some one give me a link for dummies

if you take there drums out and add a 4/4 kick it would still fit the music

listen to the typical song, count with the beat, by tapping your fingers 1-2-3-4 then the pattern repeats 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. Keep listening to the radio and counting, sooner or later you'll hear a song you can't tap along to but if you go 1-2-3-1-2-3 it fits, the former is 4/4 time, the latter is 3/4 time.nathannn wrote:i dont even understand what 4/4 or 3/4 is
4/4 - the top number tells you how many beats there are per measure. The bottom number tells you what kind of note (16th, 8th, quarter, half, whole...) defines a beat. 1/1, 2/2, 4/4, 8/8 are basically the same thing, 3/4, 6/8, 12/16 are basically the same thing.
4/9 meter means you count on the quarter notes and 1 measure has 9 quarter notes.

Don't sweat it, son. You can make all the Trance you like without knowing fancy stuff like 'time signatures'.nathannn wrote:i dont even understand what 4/4 or 3/4 is

so if your playing a song with multible time signatures to a click track, would you need that click to change in order to stay in time?

There's two parts to a metronome click the boop and the bipnathannn wrote:so if your playing a song with multible time signatures to a click track, would you need that click to change in order to stay in time?
4/4 bip boop boop boop bip boop boop boop
1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4
3/4
bip boop boop bip boop boop bip boop boop
Take 3/4 and 4/4
In 3/4 the bips and boops hit on the quarter note because they both say that '4' is the beat that you count with, the boops will line up. BUT in 3/4 the BIP happens every 3 notes, in 4/4 the BIP happens every 4 notes.
With multiple time signatures and Live you're better off just using your ears and labelling things carefully, or use another DAW like REAPER

hth and I didn't screw it up, I don't use or think about meter very often.

This isn't true. 1-2-3, 1-2-3 isn't 3/4. 3/4 has a quarter note pulse. It's 1 + 2 + 3 + . Where the 2 and 3 keep the quarter not pulse. It's all about the accents. 1-2-3, 1-2-3 is 6/8. It's about where the accent is. I would never write a part in 3/4 as 6/8. There is a difference. It's not just about things adding up to 12.Tone Deft wrote:listen to the typical song, count with the beat, by tapping your fingers 1-2-3-4 then the pattern repeats 1-2-3-4-1-2-3-4. Furthermore, when you are constructing 5/4 7/4 or other meters. Break it down into the natural phrasing. Some 4/4 parts have a psuedo 6 feel. LIke 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-. Combining smaller phrases to assemble the 'true' feel of the meter. Sometimes 5/4 could be deconstructed into a 3/4 + 2/4 prhases.
Also, if you want to get into odd times (or just practice counting), look at soundgardern, king crimson, or tool. Soundgarden has a very 'natural' way of making odd times sound like their in 4/4. Outshined is in 7/4. "The day I tried to live" is alterning bars of 7/8 and 4/4 (if i remember correctly). Pink floyd 'money' is another popular song in 7. Primus has a song called "year of the parrot" that might be one of the most natural/grooving songs in 7.
