Advice wanted for Trigger Finger controlling Ableton

Hi,

I'm trying to use the Trigger Finger with Live in a live performance context, and I'd like (for a start) to be able to use the controller to choose the instruments and presets I'm playing instead of using the mouse or computer keyboard.

So my very first question: suppose I'm playing in a MIDI track with Impulse loaded. Can I use a slider on my controller to load a different Impulse preset? Can I use a different slider or knob to turn off recording in the current track and turn on recording in another track?

And, if I *can't* do any/all of the above using just the controller, is it possible that I can feed other MIDI messages to Live from MAX to accomplish these same tasks?

I second that—racks are mos def the way to go! You can load as many instruments into a rack as you want, assign the chain selecter to a rotary controller, and you can scroll through the rack for the instrument you want.

That sounds good. I hadn't gotten into them yet, other than to use the presets, but that does sound like a simple plan. Thank you both.

or even better,

make a midi track with dummy clips containing the right envelope information for the different steps in the rotary and then u can have switch thru the fx with control.

Hello to all the TF-rs/Drummers/Live-rs out there.

Does anyone know how I can set up the TF to trigger individual samples/hits such that I would not have to take up like 16 separate audio tracks to assign to each button ? I know I could mimic the TF's 4 x 4 button array in Live w/ 4 tracks containing 4 samples in each track but this means that i couldn't play any two samples that were located in one track at the same time, per Live's limitation of one sample being played per track. Basically I am trying to find out how I can have the TF's 16 buttons be able to play any combination of 16 samples and take up as little screen real estate as possible since the drums/percussion component is only one of many parts i will need to use for my Live set. use impulse
setup 2 instances of impulse
set 1 to accept midi in from channel 10
set the other to accept midi in fro channel 11
Set your trigegr finder to factory defaults and choose preset #10

bottom 8 pads control impulse on channel 10
top 10 control impulse on channel 11

Then just drag your samples into impulse slots
all set.

there's a more in depth tutorial somewhere on here.

Related point, I just started using "MackieControl" with my trigger finger so that i can move around ableton and trigger scenes and clips without the computer keyboard or mouse.

It's pretty damn cool. Let me know if that interest you and I'll dig up the thread (since the search on these forums suck) that shows how to do it.
