Sends AHOY! (This tip might have been posted yet though)

Post by Airwave » Fri May 18, 2007 10:34 am

I rediscovered the joys of using sends in live the other day, and I was thinking of using that robert henke tip for thunder, but in an easier way so it suits my workflow and/or ideas.

Thing is, I also discovered sending a return to itself and routing it to an audio track is HILARIOUS.

Tried with delay, and had instant tape delay. Tried with reverb (and small pieces of audio), and had instant ambient fx galore!

Guys, that thing is insane, just try it out for fun.

Clouds, comes with Live. IMO it's the best one of the defaults (though I've seen it do some weird stuff like disappearling grid lines in certain displays). More people should use it though.

I cant wait till racks feed back into themselves.
Thunder in a rack.. Ambient sounds fed by a bleep... Endless reverbs... 101 types of rain... Dolby delays... Plain old school nasty feedback with distortion...

Wait - let me get this straight (I'm in the office so can't try it) - you're sending audio from "Source" to the reverb on the Return channel, routing the Return channel into "Audio Dest" and then bringing up the send level on "Audio Dest"... ?

Ok, I'm confused... I'm trying to use a midi track for the source (with a simpler). When I crank the send on the Audio Dest. track the feedback is always sounding the same no matter the sound source, and the feedback only works when the send is cranked if I turn it down a notch it just kills it. Obviously I'm doing something wrong. Can someone post a .als using a simpler or operator as the sound source? I'm missing something here.

thanks.

set the feedback to minimum and use the volume of your send to itself or the voume fader.

Ok, so is Jaberwookie's post correct? I've been suffering from insomnia for the past two weeks... I'm easily confused :?

Do it simply first

Make a track, make a send. Put a simple delay with a 3/16 clock, feedback ZEROor MINIMUM on return A. Send your track to return A. On return A, ENABLE all sends, and send the signal of the return to itself. Then make a SECOND track, with no input, then select that track as the output on return A, and active the monitoring.

I suggest you put down the volume of your speakers first as it might hurt.

So basically, the feedback is generated by the return being set to itself, the higher the send is set, the louder and longer it gets.

Now filter your return, and compress your track 2, for instant dub.

Then TRY IT WITH A REVERB instead of a delay, and tell us ;-)

Hmmm, thanks for the help. I've been trying to do it with a reverb... since I work mostly on ambient material and don't really have the need for a dub style tape echo delay. I'm still not getting anything weird or amazing with the following... so I must be just completely deadheaded.
