Changing from PC to Mac - anything I should know ?

Post by infra rob » Mon May 21, 2007 5:17 pm

Hi folks,
I've taken the plunge into the world of Mac and need to install my Ableton software onto my new Macbook.

I plan to simply install Live 5 and then use my 6 upgrade code as normal...but, is this likely to cause problems given my version of Live 5 is a few years old ? Or is there anything else I need to consider?

I'm running a intel duo core Macbook Pro 2.33ghz.

Thanks !

Rob.

Why not just installed 6.0 without live 5.0?

You shouldn't have any problems - just try it first and if it doesn't work email [email protected]

I only have the installation discs for 5, I upgraded to 6 using the Ableton website, hence only have the serial number for 6.

you should be able to go to the download section and just download the Mac version and then use your 6.0 serial number to work.

You shouldn't have to install 5.0 at all. It should work just fine though, as I did this myself while was waiting for 6.0 to come out.

Ok, that kinda makes some sense...I'll give it shot.

I'm sure there are 1000's of threads on this, but as I'm here I'll ask the question...has anyone had any problems with Live 6 on a Mac with Intel duo core processors ?

No problems over here on my Macbook Pro... 6.0.7 is pretty solid.

Aside from getting menstrual cycles, you shouldn't experience anything different.

Nope, no problems at all. Runs really great.

Nice thing about cross-platform apps like Live is that you don't have to relearn everything (or convert a bunch of projects) when switching platforms. I'm pretty sure I'll never us a DAW that isn't cross platform again.

Your only problem may be with your VSTs... A whole bunch of PC VSTs aren't available on Mac, and even some that are available don't work with Ableton (or Logic, for that matter). I limit myself mostly to AU plugins... and I've managed to find substitutes for just about everything. I'm still looking for a good free Bass Guitar VST. 4Front won't run.
My life is spent in one long effort to escape the commonplaces of existence.

If you're using a Digidesign interface, you'll probably need to upgrade to Pro Tools 7.3 in order for Live to recognize the Digi hardware as an I/O.

But more importantly, remember this, in fact, write it across your forehead with a marker:

Control Alt Delete in the world of the Apple is Apple Alt Escape

That is soo something I would have said! As tits as Macs are, i'm gonna stick with my VIAO running XP. Your choice of plugins totally stomp over Apples.

The best platform is the one that the artist feels most comfortable with, and has the most control over. I can kill that poonani with my VAIO..

You don't need to install the old Ableton at all, the download will do fine.
