Live 5 vs. Duo core MacBookPro

I am currently running Live 5.0.1 on my duo core macbookpro, 2.33Ghz using OsX 10.4.9, and the two don't want to get along. Live constantly runs at around 10% - 30%, and when i stop a clip using any effects with long tails, reverbs, delays, resonators and the like, any combination of effects, and any more than 2 clips at a time, the CPU usage shoots up to 300%.
I will upgrade to 6 when my financial situation suits it, but until then I will be running 5, any suggestions to help alleviate the strain on my hard drive?

You need at least version 5.2 to use with the new intel macs, all versions before that aren't supported.
