File Manager slows down human evolution!

Post by hoffman2k » Wed May 30, 2007 8:58 am

This is the first post of many to follow.
While the issues about the file manager have been reported... Lets go over them again, shall we?

First big issue that people like Micah, Mike and I deal with.

- When we open up the project manager for a large project such as a Live pack with a lot of samples and then close it. Live responds significantly slower to every operation.
Live needs to be restarted. This is 100% reproducable.
People who work with sets that are a few gigs in size experience the same problem.

Next big issue is the project manager that freezes up if you don't follow AN EXACT procedure.
Instead of listing what doesn't work, i'll tell you what does work. Its the only thing that works.

- When samples are missing, you are presented with a lot of options to locate the samples. No matter what i do, Live will freeze up during the search. Or it will search for close to 20 minutes and come up with no results.
There is only 1 method that works for me (and some others).
Manually locate 1 sample in Live's browser and replace it with a missing one.
Then uncheck everything besides "search near samples already found".
Live will now locate and replace the correct samples in less then 5 seconds.

Its the only thing that works. That doesn't make sense at all.
There are probably more issues, but i cant remember. Because there is only 1 way to work with the file manager.

Hi hoffman2k,

1) What are your current machine specs? How much RAM do you have installed?

2) When this problem happens, open Activity Monitor (part of OSX), select Live and click on Inspect. What do you see for memory consumption?

3) How many samples are used in this Live Set?

Thanks,
Daniel

1) dual g5 1.8 / 1256mb ram / osx 10.4.9

2) between 16% and peaks up to 96%

3) In one case its 400 samples linked to 400 .als files. In another case its about 3000 samples linked to 1 .als file.

My searches don't freeze up, but even if you define the specifc folder Live has to search in, because I know the samples are there, it does not always find them..

And if you check 'fully rescan folders' it's not always succesful in finding either.

Sometimes it finds the samples in like 4 seconds if you have the 'fully rescan' off..
But it can also be unsuccesful if you have this option on and take ages to say that 'no new candidates we're found'..
Strange..

I get the same thing. So confirmed.

Hi, can you locate this folder "User/[username]/Library/Caches/Ableton/Index" and "Get Info" to see how large it is?

Live keeps a cache file for File Manager searches inside the Index folder. If you had set a search folder to search your entire HD, the cache file might have grown pretty large which will then slow down the search. In this case, close Live and delete the content of the Library/Cache/Ableton/Index folder. Next time you open the file manager, Live will have to scan the library again, but the search should be much faster.

As to the Activity Monitor question, you probably meant CPU.
When you open Activity Monitor, then click on Live in the Process list, then the blue "Inspect" button (top left). A new window will pop up, cliclk on the memory tab and check how much memory Live is consuming.

Thanks,
Daniel

105.9 mb. The most recent accessed .db file is 96mb.

I've never been able to complete a library scan. I once let it run for a whole day. Nothing happened.
My library is huge and it will only get bigger.

I'll delete the index and try a rescan and see if i can report activity.

Its stuck at 163 files found. I'm shutting it down in 20 minutes..

Memory used:

- real : 77,64mb

- virtual : 356,96mb

- shared : 32,53mb

- Private : 58,18mb

- virtual private : 126,12mb

It unfroze and was counting up. Now it froze again, I'm at 6112 files scanned.

I understand this will make searches in the library quicker. But how about the rest of the harddrive?
Instead of some system that focuses on an outdated scan of a library folder, why not focus on a system that makes it quicker to search on local and external drives?
On the OSX end, you could integrate spotlight support. So Live would work with things such as "smart folders".

40 minutes later, scan of a 12gb library is complete.
It gave me a message about some nested projects (without specifying anything).

I'm not sure what the problem is with file manager but I tend to avoid it and use windows because I have always found it to be painfully slow, no matter whether it's indexed or not

I don't see the point of an indexed library if the existence of it actually suggest that Ableton is only willing to let Live's search capabilities focus on the library.

Obviously I will never have projects as large as yours, B...

But given what I noticed this past weekend about loading times after opening the Project Manager, I can see that it must be very bad performance for a huge set like that!!

Its not so much the size of the sets that is the problem.
Using the project manager on a 20mb project, still slows Live down enough to make me wonna restart it.

It just doesn't work as it theoretically should.

And personally I'd like to hear a response from Ableton about why they decided that searching the Ableton Live library is more important then scanning the other sample folders i have.
Ableton has changed the layout of the library in Live 4, Live 5 and Live 6.
The layout of my actual sample collection hasn't changed since 2004.

I finally tried to manage my Library. It won't do it because of the 'nested project' error, even though I cannot see any project folders in there.
