Interestingly Surface is more that just multi-touch, it does 3d image recognition too using 4 IR cameras. It recognises the object placed on the surface and gives contextual data from that object.
here's a non MS video (of surface in action)

not loving the latency, but I guess that will improve as more people compete.

things are starting to get interesting
I seriously think in 5 years we will laugh at the mouse and keyboard
it's fucking ridiculous that people in their 20s are getting RSI
BTW - looks like Microsoft either found Jeff Hans price (remember he turned Apple down) or they figured out a way of ripping him off legally

Indeed, this tech has been around a while. Jeff Han has said as much when interviewed (prior to this), he simply said " we were the first to show something that sparked peoples imaginations". He also said he know other people were working on it. FTIR is used widely in other areas, EG in fingerprint recognition.
It's all in the public domain, hardware, software. Whatever Apple would like to believe.
See my other 'DIY multi-touch' thread if you want to build your own

sounds great! I wonder if you'll need to install new drivers for every new finger you want to use with it?

Considering the size of some GUI elements that Live has, and the aiming skills we all have adquired over the years, i think taht an effective touch screen might be very very larger than any conventional screen, 24" or longer. Just like the table shown in the video.
How could you manage a such small 13" screen elements with your fingers? Its just crazy...

my whole objective is to have some kind of music creation coputer that feels as intuitve as a real instrument like a guitar or piano

we need some haptics in the mix for that. I've not seen anything that combined both multi-touch and haptics yet.
although I've not taken a look at the haptics scene for a year or more.

actually, I've been specifically interested in this stuff lately, talking about Jeff Han's setup alot thnking about how it can integrate with sound/music and I had no idea Microsoft had something like this on the cards
I'd say there's a good chance someone somewhere is working on a hybrid of this and haptics
5 years I give it and these types of things will be common
