i always find it funny when apples multi touch thing comes up and people refer to it as "jeff han technology" jeff han used internal reflection, which requires a PROJECTOR and a IR CAMERA. the apple tech uses capacitance, just like the lemur.

both are already obsolete though. check this out.

I love love love this thing. The website is very nicely done. The Surface really isn't too big for a club installation, or even a touring rig. I'd pay 10k if there was an awesome dj app for it.

they did beat apple to the punch on this though. its just great to see microsoft doing something cool after Vista ate such horrib

It looks awesome but I wonder how much something like this would cost to set up - lasers cant be cheap

the thing with Jeff Han is it's conceivable to set something like that up at home, but one of the things he said when asked was the reason he decided a surface was required, after years of research, was because humans find they need to touch something for balance and orientation

Yes. You obviously nead the actuated mirrors and receiver, but in terms of a source a laser pointer should be fine.

I made some shit like this back in college
http://www.laserfx.com/Science/Science8.html

whoa man... you can like totally see the music... *cough* *cough*

Considering the projects listed above take a motor, tie to it a comm port on a computer and you can control what you draw.

Red lasers can be pretty cheap, they even put them on keychains.

Creative industries in Brisbane, Australia

the sub major that I think will lead on to it is computational arts

actually there was this really cool guy on telly last week who had put MIDI triggers all over his body and was juggling with these glowing balls in the dark and making them hit on all these triggers and he was just making a tune up - funk ass drum loops with samples from the show's host saying a bunch of stuff and he made it scratch and everything

it was well cool

and its still a hell of a lot cheaper than a projector+web cam for the jeff han technique.

but the best part is there is no blob detection(computer vision) involved, so you dont need some hefty computer to run it.

Minority report did it in the air not on a table top and Wii (Nintindo does it like eye toy from Palystation 2 in the air as well. there was some cool videos on youtube showing 2 guys playing air drums with Wii controllers
I think that this is more futuristic than MS's idea here.
I mean havnt we had touch screen computer and even keyboard with touch screen (Korg) for donkeys years
I remeber going to the paint shop 5 years ago and using touch screens to paint a virtual house image as i wanted.. Maybe I am missing something ?
