Look I'll put it as simply as possible -
Never blame a lack of equipment on a lack of ideas.
A tool is a tool and a great work of art is a great work of art whether you used bog standard acrylics and $5 paint brushes or top of the line oil paint and hog's
hair paint brushes.
We can all fall into the trap of thinking better gear will generate better music.
It may generate a finer detailed sonic result (in the right hands I might add) but great sound quality doesn't by default mean great music.
You keep referring to older artists who used pretty archaic technology by todays standards and then some.
Most of the Beatles early material was recorded on Monophonic 4 or 8 track at best for example and what you can achieve sound wise now with just an MBox, Protools LE, a few Mic's and a Mixer is nothing short of outstanding.
The reality is I get the impression like all creative types you have moments when you are in an artistic slump and things just don't seem to flow naturally and you've lost your Muse.
Well it happens too all of us and using the gear YOU HAVE as an Excuse for your lack of creative output or your inability to create what you hear in your minds eye is by in large a cop out.
As trite as the saying is ...is really isn't what you use but HOW you use it.
I have had the same laptop for 3 odd years now.
I don't use the latest version of Live .
In fact I flit between version 3 and Version 5.2 depending on the project at hand still and have all the revisions in between still installed on my laptop.
I am still using the exact same instrument/vsti's I did 3 years ago also bar a few freeware bits and pieces and never feel stuck for ideas myself.
When I feel like I'm stuck for ideas I usually take a break and approach what I have with a fresh outlook in mind.
Sometimes you need to metaphorically "sit on your hands" and let your mind do the work for you.
There are always more ways to achieve an end goal or result than you realize with the gear you have and some lateral thinking.

Somewhere between a rock and a hard place is actually nowhere.
feller i been listening to your tunes and while they arent really up my street i think i get the direction you are going in with them and i always find it refreshing when people use live to experiment with different genres.
your nurse with wound friend add is nice too, i dont really listen to his stuff much either but i find what he gets up to very very interesting.
but as regards spending loads of money on new gear to get those new sounds that you want, go ahead and do it if you're sure it'll help. but i must be way different to you in that respect as the idea of spending that amount of cash on equipment just fills me with dread. i find it much much more satisfying making sounds and tunes that (to me at least) sound great but were recorded using equipment that cost next to nothing or at least not much.
what do i use to record with lately ? my minidisc and cheap sony stereo mic, an old telefunken mic that cost me one pound at a car boot sale and the mic on my mobile phone.
what gear have i acquired lately ? a little reel to reel tape recorder that cost 30 quid and the oatmeal and texture vst synths which are freeware.
each to his own though, if you think your ideas need more kit then fine. but as they say where i come from (yorkshire) : there's more than one way to skin a cat.

thanks to all you who made the thread readable.
what came from my side had a funny undertone, i didn´t think it that hard. i twas just an aaarrrrrgh to have a joy- and useful conversation. thank you very much for having a part in it!. cause its verfy important to state it again and again, that not the biggest studio could never substitute passion.
