does anyone actually talk about MUSIC on here, or simply about gear?
Sure, there are plenty of other threads about music. This thread is called "Live Performance Test 1 and 2" as it's useful to know how a machine performs, as an instrument, in comparison as some people may need more than what they are getting. They may even not be getting what they should be from the system they already have.
who cares what you use, it's what your making with it that counts.
It matters to some at times. Thank you for posting ytour test results.
yeah, i use a mac...
and?

I just got back my processor upgrade from power logix for my Pismo powerbook, it's now a G3 1gHz with a 1MB cache, 1GB ram

I was saying in another thread that as live is not altivec and as a large cache is supposed to be more helpful for repetetive things like looping, there was a good chance this would end up a halfway decent machine

well I did a quick comparison last night with the demo arrangement that came with live 3.02 with my athlon 2200 PC laptop with 7200 internal drive and 1 GB ram and I was quite surprised, there only seemed to be about 10% in it - the athlon peaked about 25% on the cpu meter and the Pismo about 33-35%

I'll do another test when I get a chance, but so far I'm pretty impressed

Time for Live 3 - Live 4 CPU comparisons

Post by FaX-01 » Mon Jun 28, 2004 11:08 am

Just thought I'd add to this ...

Toshiba Satellite P20
3.2ghz H/T
512 cache
800mhz FSB
1024meg ram
Lacie D2 drive...
Echo Indigo DJ (3ms latency) 24/48 mode

1: idle 1%
2:demo - max % is between 6-11% (11%max)largely at around 6% for most of it.
(this is Live CPU meter)

However if I open the Windows CPU meter
it states quite clearly that I'm using ........

on 1: 1%
on 2: 8%

Oh yeah and a Reverb at highest quality utilises 3% CPU on this unit (ie: a 3% CPU bump per reverb added)

Most I've used so far is 14 tracks w/ 3 reverbs an 1 to two inserts per track and haven't nudged 25% as yet.

Interested to see the results from Live 4 beta testers myself.

PS: I'm on version 3.01a with XP pro is 3.02 or 3.04 any better ?????

3.0.2 is best on pc. you can still download it by changing the extension number on the 3.0.4 download.

I guess I'm not 100% sure, but I know that the 3.0.3 update had some disk activity issues, and I think there were a few with 3.0.4 as well. both 3.0.3 and 3.0.4 only had improvements for mac, so I stuck with 3.0.2. I guess I say it is the best because it has been so stable for me--haven't really given 3.0.4 a full go as 3.0.2 has been great. So i guess I could be wrong, but I'm happy--I'm sure 3.0.4 works great too.

okay, thanks. I had some problem using Wavelab as editor so I upgraded to 3.0.4 The issue with Wavelab is not solved but other than that everything is working fine. But maybe I will check 3.0.2 again on day and compare it to 3.0.4

I remember the rendering issue, but I guess that was fixed in 3.0.2

This thread needs to be redone, most people didn't post their latency settings.

That's makes these results useless information (!)

Update on 3.04 - Ableton said it's fine in XP

Post by FaX-01 » Tue Jun 29, 2004 3:35 am

Ok just uploaded Version 3.04 to my Toshiba P20 ...

Spec is in the signature.....
Latency is 5ms at 24/48 conversion

Idle 1: 1%
2:6% maximum. (all tracks between bars 30-40)

Much lower than 3.01a so I'm happy.
It also handles my smart electronics VST's really well (smooth as butter) :)
