Getting Battery 3 to work in Live?

Post by Darkecho » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:14 pm

I load it up into its own midi channel, but then I have no idea which notes correspond to the battery drum sounds..

also, is there a way to hit record in live and click the battery GUI and have it place a midi note whenever you click battery's pads with your mouse?

You can assign the cells in Battery to a specific note ...
when you have Battery 3 open, click on the cell tab ... there is
field for Key Range. It tells you there what note it is set to, and
gives you an option to "learn" or customize.

hope that helps

wow, that seems like it would take a long time and be very time consuming... is this the most common method of doing this? or is it most common to have controller hooked up? is there any way to setup your mouse+battery's gui to be a midi controller?

is there a way to rename the notes in Live and save it so that you can see drum names (like with impulse) instead of notes?

Yes there is...

Someone more knowledgeable will chime in here any second!
What I did was took the Midi Note Namer graciously given away by the Covert Ops and made a rack with Battery in it. I have a few of these set up with favorite kits named out.

Tried word for word what Penelope Cruz over there said and it did not work for me. It didn't map shit.

it seems like this can't be the usual way of doing this. do most people just drop the battery samples into Impulse?

Each cell shows what notes are in its key range (note assignments) on its info tab. This can be changed to whatever you want, but until the upcoming 3.02 patch comes out Battery 3 won't remember its mapping with empty cells. So you either have to assign them by hand each time you use it, or else load it with a "dummy" clip and save it that way. This is what I did before I ditched Battery altogether. I'll revisit it after the new patch comes out, but it's already been delayed a month.

This is what Penelope was talking about, but the "learn" aspect doesn't work on empty cells yet.

Out of curiosity, what are you using now that you do not use Battery?

In Live I'm just using Impulse, a couple racks I've made for it. In Reaper I use EZ Drummer and a "pseudo-rack" of stacked samplers which is pretty close to Impulse. ReaPulse? ;-)

what if I just open battery as a "previewer" of its sounds, and once I have the sounds I like, i just import the wav/aiffs to impulse? does impulse alter the sounds or anything? I think that might be one workaround.

also, I dont understand the empty cell situation, but you are saying that NI is working on a patch to remedy this issue I have?

Why would you need to preview sounds in Battery before putting them into Impulse? That's what the browser is for! Simply drag from the browser right into Impulse.

NI is working on a patch to fix a BUNCH of problems with B3:

EDIT: Holy crap, the patch is out!
New Features:

* New Templates Kits with predefined key ranges included.

Fixes:

* Initialization time has been reduced significantly
* Keyranges now saved in empty cell-matrix (matrix without samples)
* Add Sample works now correctly after a cell has been loaded
* Errors during re-save process (Kits and samples) have been fixed
* Delete Cell now resets sound parameters
* Changes in output routing are now saved
* Hotkeys are no longer "stolen" from the host
* Import mapping now combines velocity layers of the same key range in one cell
* Crash on load fixed in standalone, in Live 5, and in Logic
* Cubase 4 serious error in wave editor has been fixed
* Crash trying to copy from a sample has been fixed
* Several crashes on quitting Battery have been fixed
* Crash when quitting audio setup dialog has been fixed
* Crash when mounting a new browser volume has been fixed
* Library cache file corruption problem has been fixed
* Voices should not be restricted any longer
