1st go to itunes prefs... under "advanced" section, there is an importing tab. change the codec to aiff.

Then right click on the files you want to convert, and import them to aiff. They will automatically be placed in your itunes music folder.

I use AudioFinder for this. It has a nice feature "Convert Using iTunes" that does it without screwing up my iTunes settings for the next time I do an import.

what possible benefit could there be in converting from a (lossy)compressed audio format to a (lossless) one other than occupying more disk space? You're not going to improve fidelity.

Not having to deal with live's mp3 decoding cache.

Burning an audio cd that can play on a cd player that can't read mp3s?

huh? Nero will burn an audio CD (.cda) from mp3 source files.

When itunes burns an audio CD it is always burned to a format CD players can play regardless of the source format. So that shouldn't be an issue.

A possible other reason for wanting AIFF format files instead of mp3 is because some other applications/plugins outside of Live won't import mp3s into their interface.

I thought that by converting ao AIFF the music would sound a lot better especially working in a club or at a party with a decent sound system. Is this not correct?

If the file is already an mp3 then changing it to AIFF or any other format will not improve the quality. It can't add stuff that isn't already there.
